The extreme cold weather in our region last night and today is caused by what is known as a "polar vortex." Following a few years of other weather pehonomenons here, from a microburst to a deracho, this one drives Arctic air from the north pole far south.
It is causing a number of schools and many other businesses across the region to close today to keep kids and employees safe. Doctors say that you really need to limit your time outside to avoid frostbite and other serious health conditions from flaring up.
If your heat stops working or you lose power, get to a family or friends house to find warmth and be careful with portable heaters. Never use a generator inside and don't overload the circuits in your house.
