CULPEPER, Va. (AP) - A case involving the 1996 slaying of a Culpeper County woman is being delayed to allow more time for DNA tests.
Special prosecutor Raymond Morrough requested the delay Monday during a status hearing in Culpeper County Circuit Court. Judge Cheryl Higgins continued the case until June 18.
Morrough told Higgins that witnesses are being interviewed and the investigation is making progress.
Morrough will decide whether Michael Wayne Hash will be retried for the death of 74-year-old Thelma Scroggins.
In February, a federal judge overturned Hash's 2001 capital murder conviction and life sentence, citing prosecutorial and police misconduct. Hash was released from prison and remains free on bond.
Hash was 15 at the time of Scroggins' death. He will celebrate his 31st birthday on April 23.
