5th District Candidates Agree to 2 Debates

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) - Candidates vying for the 5th District congressional seat have agreed to two debates.

Republican Rep. Robert Hurt and Democratic challenger John Douglass will face off on Oct. 10 in Danville and then again on Oct. 15 in Warrenton.

The Daily Progress reports that Douglass had wanted more debates, but Hurt's campaign says the two were the only ones in which a schedule could be agreed upon. Douglass has appeared solo at two debates, although Hurt's campaign says he never received an invitation to one of them because of an erroneous email address.

Two independent candidates - Kenneth J. Hildebrandt of Halifax County and Ben Hudson of Fluvanna County - also are running, but neither was invited to the two debates.

     Election Day is Nov. 6.
