Afghan leader blasts US over probe into shootings

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) - Afghan President Hamid Karzai says he's told President Barack Obama that U.S. troops should leave bases in rural parts of Afghanistan.

The U.S. soldier accused in the killings of 16 Afghan civilians Sunday was stationed at one of those bases in Kandahar province. Karzai says he spoke with Obama this morning and told him that "the fight is not in the villages and "Americans should leave" them.

The Afghan president held an emotional meeting today with family members of those who were killed. Karzai denounced what he called a lack of U.S. cooperation in the investigation into the shootings and said he plans to raise questions with the U.S. military "very loudly," warning that he's at the "end of the rope" over civilian casualties in the war.

Karzai says villagers' accounts of the massacre vary widely different from the scenario depicted by U.S. military officials.
