Most local schools, the U.S. Federal Government and the Marine Corps Base Quantico are closed ahead of today's snow storm. There is no FRED bus service and VRE is on an "S" schedule.
Accuweather says up to 6 inches could fall by early evening. The winter storm warning will stay in effect until 11:00 tonight, but the bulk should fall between about noon and 7 p.m. The falling temperatures and increasing wind will add to the problems with freezing, blowing and drifting snow and even power outages.
VDOT started sanding and treating roads before sunset on Monday night, but is asking folks to be careful. They will likely still have problems keeping up with the pace of snow. If you can avoid being on the roads in the mid and late afternoon, that's probably the best idea.
