Court in Virginia Hears Appeal in NC Plot to Attack Quantico

by AP posted Sep 19 2013 12:40PM
RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Attorneys for three members of a North Carolina terror ring are asking a federal appeals court in Virginia to toss out their convictions because of insufficient evidence and other issues.

The 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Richmond heard arguments on Thursday in the case of Mohammad Omar Aly Hassan, Hysen Sherifi and Ziyad Yaghi.

The three men were convicted in 2011 of conspiring to attack the U.S. Marine Base in Quantico, Va., and foreign targets. They were given sentences ranging from 15 to 45 years in federal prison.

A jury in New Bern, N.C., convicted the men after a month-long trial. They were part of a group of eight men who allegedly raised money, stockpiled weapons and trained in preparation for jihadist attacks against perceived enemies of Islam.
