FREDERICKSBURG, Va. (AP) - The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers plans to remove an 84-year-old dam near Culpeper that has impeded fish and canoeing.
Jean Scott owns the property above Monumental Mills on the Hazel River. She tells
The Free Lance-Star that she has signed a contract with the corps to remove the concrete-and-rock structure.
The dam is no longer used. It was part of a hydroelectric plant that was decommissioned after a flood in 1946.
Last year, the Culpeper County Board of Supervisors asked the state to remove the dam because it was preventing canoeists from moving downstream.
The dam also prevents fish from moving upstream.
Scott says the dam will removed in segments. The project could begin later this summer.
