Ex Governor's Mansion Chef's Background Not Checked

by AP posted Mar 28 2012 9:19AM
RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Gov. Bob McDonnell's office says it didn't request a background check on the former Executive Mansion chef who left amid a Virginia State Police investigation.

The State Police said last week that it's investigating "improprieties involving the kitchen operation at the governor's mansion." No charges have been filed or arrests made.

McDonnell spokesman Tucker Martin tells media outlets that the hiring process for administration positions requires a background check and a full vetting of the applicant. But that wasn't done in the case of Todd Schneider.

Schneider was convicted on a misdemeanor embezzlement charge in 2000 and received a six-month suspended sentence.

Martin says Schneider didn't reveal the conviction during the interview process. He says Schneider wouldn't have been hired if the administration had known about his background.
