Eyeball Licking Fad Among Youth is Dangerous

by Deirdre Blake posted Jun 20 2013 4:22PM

It might just be kids rebelling, but a new fad in Japan that has spread to part of the U.S. could make them sick.
Some kids have started licking each others eyeballs, known as "worming." Fredericksburg eye doctor Lee Brock says it's scary. The mouth is a tropical wonderland of tons of bacteria brewing at 98 degrees, 24 hours a day. If a tongue licks an eyeball, it could transfer those germs and cause pinkeye or a more serious infection and lead to vision problems. It could also cause the cornea to be scratched and cause even bigger issues.
Brock says if a 16 year old in given a car and told it is the only one they are getting, the will likely take care of it well. Parents need to have the same conversation with young people about their bodies.
