Fake Grenade Closes Road, Draws Loudoun Bomb Squad

LEESBURG, Va. (AP) - Officials in Loudoun County say a fake grenade was responsible for closing Route 28 for several hours after a car crash.

The collision took place Wednesday evening about 6:30 p.m. Loudoun County sheriff's deputies say a volunteer firefighter noticed what appeared to be a grenade in one of the vehicles involved in the crash.

As a precaution, authorities shut down Route 28 in both directions until 9:30 p.m. Wednesday night. Fire officials worked with the county bomb squad to investigate the device. They eventually determined it was a replica grenade and was deemed harmless.
