SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) - A Georgia graduate student fighting a rare flesh-eating bacterial infection has seen the severe damage to her hands and is accepting it without tears.
Aimee Copeland remained in critical condition at an Augusta hospital Wednesday, more than two weeks after she fell onto some rocks from a broken zip line. A gash in her leg developed into the infection.
Doctors had to amputate most of her left leg. Her father, Andy Copeland, says she will lose her fingers, too.
He says his daughter doesn't know that yet, but she has looked at her hands and asked about the damage.
Copeland is on a respirator. Doctors are removing the tube in her mouth and throat and replacing it with one inserted through her trachea to make her more comfortable.
