Flood Warning and Watch; Big Problems for the Rappahannock River

by Deirdre Blake posted Apr 30 2014 10:44AM

Meteorologists think wind damage from thunderstorms today and tonight across the Fredericksburg region could cause a big problem on area roads. A flash flood warning is in place for the City of Fredericksburg and a flash flood watch remains in effect for the rest of the region, until late tonight.
The water coming down river from the Remington and Rapidan areas will also cause issues for the Rappahannock River. This morning, the National Weather Service thought it would crest at about 9 feet Thursday morning. Now, the guage west of the city could hit 22 feet by 8:00 a.m. tomorrow and that's alomst ten feet above flood level. It could mean big problems for people that live in flood plains near the river and for many local roads. The NWS says follow the TADD rule...turn around and don't drown. Flood water can stall your car, and flash flooding can cause dangrous debris. Just six inches of rushing water could sweep you off your feet.
Flooding is still the number one natural disaster and FEMA says it's a concern, even in Fredericksburg. The flood of 1996 cost people thousands of dollars and you need a policy separate from your homeowner's one to be covered.
