James Monroe High School, 2300 Washington Ave, 8/29 5:30 p.m. An off-duty Sergeant with
the Fredericksburg Police Department arrived at the school to meet his son who had just
completed practice with the cross-country team when it was discovered that his son’s backpack
and another student’s backpack had been stolen. All of the cross-country team had left their
things outside the school near a rear entrance. The two stolen backpacks contained wallets, cell
phones, and other items of value belonging to three of the team members.
One of the missing cell phones was equipped with a tracking application. Sergeant Reed, along
with one of the parents of a second student/victim, used the app to follow the location of the
phone to the 2400 block of Charles Street, where they encountered four male subjects. With
assistance from on-duty patrol officers, the four subjects were detained; two of them were found
to be in possession of the stolen property.
Gerry Turner, 32, and Deangelo Anderson, 28, each of no fixed address, were both arrested and
charged with felony larceny. Anderson was also wanted on outstanding charges from King
George and Spotsylvania Counties for failure to appear in court.
While Anderson was confined in the rear of a patrol car, he managed to reposition his
handcuffed arms from his back to the front of his body. When an officer removed one of the
cuffs to put Anderson’s hands behind him, Anderson was able to break free and flee on foot. He
was located approximately two hours later still on Charles Street and taken into custody again,
with additional charges of resisting arrest and escape.
Anderson was incarcerated at the Rappahannock Regional Jail under no bond. Turner was
incarcerated under a $1500 bond.
