BURGLARY/LARCENY/FRAUD:
George Washington Motel, 1320 Jefferson Davis Hwy, 5/12 – 5/13 12:00 p.m. On May 12,
officers responded to a room at the motel for a report of a deceased female. Family members
had come to the motel to check on their relative and called police when her death was
discovered. Investigators determined that the death of the 58-year-old woman was not
suspicious in nature.
On May 15, the investigating detective received information from one of the relatives that the
wallet belonging to the deceased was missing. Additionally, a fraud investigator from a local
bank informed the detective that the debit card belonging to the deceased had been used to make
purchases at local businesses on the day after the victim’s death.
Further investigation into those debit card transactions led to the identification of the suspect,
William Darr, Jr, 35, of Spotsylvania. Darr was present at the motel when the body of the
deceased was discovered and he assisted the relatives in gaining entry to the room prior to police
arrival. When Darr was arrested, jewelry belonging to the deceased was found in his possession.
Darr was charged with burglary, grand larceny, credit card theft, credit card forgery, obtaining
money by false pretenses, criminally receiving goods and services fraudulently obtained, and
identity theft. Darr is incarcerated at the Rappahannock Regional Jail under no bond.
