Gano holds off Rackers in Redskins kicking battle
ASHBURN, Va. (AP) - Incumbent Graham Gano has beaten out Neil Rackers in the competition for the Washington Redskins kicking job.
Rackers was among the first round of cuts Monday as the Redskins trimmed their roster to 75 players.
Gano won a competition that was mainly decided on the practice field. The Redskins attempted only two field goals in their first three preseason games, both by Rackers. He made a 28-yarder and missed from 54.
The 25-year-old Gano missed an NFL-high 10 field goal attempts last season, but five were blocked. He's made 74 percent of his attempts since joining the Redskins during the 2009 season, the second-worst percentage in the NFL over that span.
The 36-year-old Rackers has played for Cincinnati, Atlanta and Houston over 12 seasons.
