Giffords Visits Site of Mass Connecticut School Shooting

NEWTOWN, Conn. (AP) - Former U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords of Arizona is visiting the Connecticut town where a gunman killed 26 people last month inside an elementary school.

Giffords, who was shot and critically wounded in a 2011 shooting, met with lawmakers and local officials, including U.S. Sen. Richard Blumenthal. Giffords was accompanied by her husband, astronaut Mark Kelly. A spokesman says she was planning to meet with families of some of the Newtown victims.

Giffords was left partially blind, with a paralyzed right arm and brain injury, when a gunman opened fire at a constituent meet-and-greet in Arizona two years ago. Six others were killed and 13 people, including Giffords, were injured.

At the time of last month's school massacre, Gifford's husband said it should lead to better gun control.
