Government Shutdown Spurred the Delay in Your 2013 IRS Refund

The IRS will start processing 2013 tax returns on the 31st, but many of us have already gotten our 10-99s and W-2s in the mail. The question is, are you prepared to file? Make sure you are organized and have receipts for any charitable donations or any other deductions you plan to claim. Check out whether you're eligible to file your federal and state taxes for free and look out for red flags that could set you up for an audit.
An area H&R Block tax adviser tells us the IRS' delay in processing until the 31th is because of the government shutdown. Even if you file a return early, don't expect a refund until about the middle of next month. About 18 million people usually file this month because they have a refund coming. If you email it though, when the IRS starts taking them you'll be among the first in line.
