Jacob Courtney is among a group of friends that are lucky to be safe today after a run-in with masked robbers over the weekend.
He tells WFLS it happened early Sunday morning while they were camping in the woods behind their families Lee's Hill subdivision. Courtney says the five armed men rushed in from the surrounding woods, forced the group to the ground at gunpoint and demanded money. Courtney says it was impossible to tell if the guns were real and a few of them actually thought it could have been a prank. They all laid down on the ground and those at gunpoint surrendered the money in their wallets. After one friend tried to stand up and retaliate, he was kicked in the face, suffering a broken nose. Courtney says several of his friends then got up to try and ward off their assailants. The five then ran off into the woods, but not before getting money from the men.
Authorities are still looking for information on the five suspects. They are warning local campers to go to secure locations that are not that remote so they can be found by authorities in an emergency.

Long Lines and Many "Black Friday" Deals in Fredericksburg
by Deirdre Blake

Deals abound for those willing to stand in lines for "Black Friday" doorbusters and other holiday deals. :
Some merchants opened Thursday night and those willing to be patient and brave the sea of people made out well. Some saved several hundred dollars. One woman tells WFLS that she saved $150 on a tablet.
For some the deals were great, but the experience was a little scary. One lady tells us she didn't expect the chaos. She and a group waited around a taped off kiosk of discounted video games at one retailer. The group tried to plan in advance and agreed to grab the games the person on the other side needed, so there was no stampede. While she thinks it was a great idea, sometimes the best laid plans fall apart. When she went to bend down and get the games on the lower side of her side, the tall folks behind her rushed in. "I kind of fell forward and face planted into a cardboard display, she says."
Patrick Davis again this year arrived early, on Monday, and pitched his four man tent in front of Best Buy. He says that he has been first for the fourth year in a row, but has to keep coming a little earlier. Last year he and his family saved $1500 on some big ticket items like tvs and other electronics. Many adults want the electronics and what do kids want? Everything from the resurrected "Furby" and video games to the Ipad Touch fifth generation are on the list.
Some people say they stay up late or wake up early and make a list to get the savings, but for many it is tradition. We caught up with one group of sisters from Louisa County who have traveled to the Spotsylvania Towne Center for "Black Friday" deals for 20 years.
At some stores, like Toy's R' Us, security is limiting the people going in at one time. A heavy police presence has been noticed outside many area merchants and on roads leading to the shopping areas. For those who waited late Friday or the weekend to shop, the crowds might be a little lighter.

Making a holiday shopping plan before you hit the stores for "Black Friday" and other holiday sales this week will save headaches down the road.
Gail Cunningham of the National Foundation for Credit Counseling says if you tend to overspend, find a buddy to go with you. She says you don't have to air your financial life with them though. Consider just saying you are making an early New Year's resolution to be more financially responsible.
You should shop around for the best price, through sale fliers and on-line before you leave home. Make a gift and budget list and consider layaway. Credit can seem easy to use, but becomes a burden when the bill is still around next year.

Following Superstorm Sandy, Virginia and many other states are seeing an influx of flood damaged vehicles.
Most people are used to asking for a Carfax report, but that does not always help. If you go to buy a car, it is often a hidden danger because it does not always have to be reported. Sunni Brown with the Virginia DMV says insurance companies are only required to report flood damage that they have seen if they pay more than $3,500.
People should look for telltale signs like grit in engine compartments, rusted screws, newly shampooed upholstery and a smell of must or mold.
Make sure you ask the right questions and thoroughly inspect the car before making the purchase.

New Voter ID Laws in Effect; Long Lines at Area Polling Places

Tuesday's election is the first time that a newly approved voter i.d. law in Virginia is in affect. It means that you have to have an acceptable form of i.d. to cast a ballot on site. Caroline County Registrar Danette Moen says there are a number of acceptable documents. Among them, a driver's license, a voter i.d. card, a government or work issued photo i.d., a current utility bill and added this year, a concealed handgun permit. The complete list is at www.sbe.virginia.gov.
The Department of Justice gave the nod to the change over the summer. Virginia is one of 16 state that require federal approval to change voting laws.
Long lines awaited voters at several polling places in Stafford County and in the City of Fredericksburg short after polls opened on this chilly morning. Ballots are being cast in what will likely be a close presidential race and to elect the person that will take the job of outgoing Senator Jim Webb. There are also a few area Congressional races and some are electing local officials. Bundled up and armed with coffee cups, voters tell WFLS the 30 plus minute wait is worth it. Many say it is their right to vote and it is important to let your voice be heard.
There are also two ballot questions, one to amend the constitution to protect personal property rights and another affecting general assembly veto sessions.
Polls are open across Virginia until 7:00 p.m.

SPRINGFIELD, Va. (AP) - The Virginia Department of Transportation says the multi-billion dollar 495 Express Lanes project is on track to open earlier than expected.
Officials said Wednesday the high-occupancy toll lanes could open as soon as Nov. 17 on the Capital Beltway. To use the lanes, drivers will need an E-Z Pass to pay the tolls. There are no toll booths.
Officials are encouraging drivers to prepare ahead of time to learn how the lanes work.
Two new toll lanes will run in each direction from the Springfield Interchange to the Dulles Toll Road in Virginia. The toll lanes will operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Pricing will change based on traffic conditions to keep the lanes moving.
The project was expected to conclude by the end of the year.
