Louisa Man in Court in Bogus Pardon Scheme

by Associated Press posted Jun 26 2013 5:46AM
YORKTOWN, Va. (AP) - A Louisa County man accused of swindling an imprisoned former state legislator's family in a bogus pardon scheme is due in court.
A preliminary hearing is set Wednesday for 52-year-old Joseph Yancey in York County General District Court. Yancey is charged with six counts of obtaining money by false pretenses.
Yancey allegedly scammed the family of former Del. Phillip Hamilton, who was convicted of bribery and extortion after soliciting a job at Old Dominion University that he helped create with taxpayer money. Hamilton is serving a 9 1/2-year prison sentence.
Hamilton's ex-wife has said she paid Yancey more than $20,000 to bankroll what turned out to be a fraudulent bid to obtain a presidential pardon for the former Newport News lawmaker.
