A 19-year-old man was struck and killed by an Amtrak train in Culpeper County this morning.
Fredericksburg.com reports that shortly after departing the Culpeper station around 8 a.m., the train crew noticed three men on the tracks about 150 yards north of the intersection of Fairfax Street and Wine Street. The crew attempted to stop the train and sounded the horn, and two of the men safely got out of the way. The third man did not move and was struck by the train. He was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.
The Amtrak Crescent was headed to New York from New Orleans. It was carrying 266 passengers, and had just picked up three passengers from the Culpeper station. It was traveling about 40 mph when it struck the man.
The identity of the victim is being withheld pending notification of family.
