Martinsville supports keeping uranium mining ban

by AP posted Nov 28 2012 4:55PM

MARTINSVILLE, Va. (AP) - Martinsville City Council is asking lawmakers to keep a moratorium on uranium mining in Virginia.

The council's legislative agenda for 2013 says uranium mining would damage all other economic development efforts in the region.

Council members unanimously approved the agenda Tuesday.

Virginia Uranium wants to tap a 119 million-pound uranium deposit in Pittsylvania County. The company has said mining the deposit would produce hundreds of jobs and millions of dollars in revenue and tax dollars for the region.

A multi-agency working group studying the possibility of uranium mining is expected to release its report by the end of the week. The $1.2 million report won't include a recommendation as to whether the ban should be lifted.
