Military Honored; Ride to Recovery Comes to Fredericksburg

by Deirdre Blake posted May 27 2014 8:18AM

Lots of veterans around Fredericksburg and northern Virginia were honored yesterday for good reason. One in every hundred is a retired military vet. A new Wallet Hub survey looks at the best and worst states for them and Virginia did pretty well. It ranks third in veteran job opportunities and one in every 1,000 small businesses is owned by a vet.
From the Fredericksburg national cemetery luminaria to local musical concerts, lots of people took time to honor sacrifices of the military over the weekend and yesterday. The sound of all the motorcycles heard around northern Virginia and DC yesterday were from the annual Rolling Thunder motorcycle rally. It honors military vets, in particular the ones who are still missing in action.
On the heels of Memorial Day, you might see lots of military on modified bikes rolling through the area today. They're part of the Ride to Recovery Memorial Challenge that helps disabled vets modify bikes to ride and raise awareness. On the six day ride, they're headed from DC to Virginia Beach. The up to 200 riders are set to get to Fredericksburg from Manassas today and leave for Richmond tomorrow.
