NORFOLK, Va. (AP) - The aircraft carrier Dwight D. Eisenhower is returning to its Norfolk home port in time for the Fourth of July holiday.
The Virginian-Pilot reports ( ) that more than 5,000 sailors aboard the ship are due back next week. Most of the 547 aircraft that are part of Carrier Air Wing 7 will return to Norfolk Naval Station and Oceana Naval Station on Tuesday. The ship will pull into port Wednesday.
The Eisenhower has been gone for 10 of the last 12 months. It deployed from June through December last year. After a two-month break to have its flight deck resurfaced, the ship left again in February.
The Navy says the air wing logged more than 5,200 missions. About 1,300 flights were designated as combat sorties over Afghanistan.
