Fifty Spellers Advance to Semifinals of National Spelling Bee
by Associated Press

Fifty spellers have advanced to the semifinals of the National Spelling Bee, including the sister of the 2009 winner and two of last year’s finalists.
Vanya Shivashankar, a 10-year-old fifth-grader from Olanthe, Kansas, was the only competitor to earn a perfect score in the preliminary rounds. Those included two words spelled onstage and a 50-word computer test.
Shivashankar’s older sister, Kavya, won the 2009 Scripps National Spelling Bee.
Six-year-old Lori Anne Madison of Lake Ridge, Va., the youngest speller in bee history, did not make the semifinals. Spelling Bee director Paige Kimball said "it was close."
The computer test was much tougher than last year’s, when spellers who got more than two words wrong did not make the semifinals. This year, spellers could miss eight words and still advance.

Romney Clinches GOP Nomination

LAS VEGAS (AP) - Mitt Romney has won the Republican presidential nomination after years of fighting, though his triumph was partially overshadowed by Donald Trump, the real estate mogul who has stoked doubts about whether President Barack Obama was born in America.
Primary voters in Texas on Tuesday pushed Romney past the 1,144-delegate threshold he needed to win the nomination. Meanwhile, the candidate was raising money at the Trump International Hotel in Las Vegas.
Trump steered clear of the so-called "birther" issue at Tuesday night's fundraiser at his hotel, but brought it up several times during earlier media interviews. Romney hasn't condemned Trump's assertions despite intensified criticism from Democrats and Republicans.
Romney will continue his fundraising push this week in wealthy California enclaves like Hillsborough, near San Francisco, and Beverly Hills.

DEA Agents Investigated in Colombia Prostitution Scandal
by Associated Press

|
WASHINGTON (AP) - The Justice Department inspector general's office said Monday it is investigating possible misconduct by Drug Enforcement Administration personnel in Colombia unrelated to the Secret Service incident with prostitutes at a Cartagena hotel.
The Drug Enforcement Administration said the probe began based on information provided by the Secret Service and that the DEA is making its employees available to be interviewed by the IG's investigators.
CBS News reported that three DEA agents were under investigation for allegedly hiring prostitutes in Cartagena.
The IG said it is receiving full cooperation from the DEA and that the IG is coordinating the investigation with the Homeland Security Department's inspector general, the State Department's Diplomatic Security Service and the Secret Service.
The DEA has permanent offices in Colombia. The Bogota-based DEA regional director, who oversees the Cartagena office, did not immediately return email or cellphone messages.
In the Secret Service probe, investigators have interviewed the Colombia prostitute at the center of the affair, Dania Londono Suarez.
She said a dispute over payment led to the April 12 incident becoming public.
A dozen Secret Service officers and supervisors and 12 other U.S. military personnel have been implicated in the incident, which took place before President Barack Obama's visit to the Summit of the Americas. Eight people with the Secret Service, including two supervisors, have lost their jobs. The Secret Service is moving to permanently revoke the security clearance for one other employee, and three others have been cleared of serious wrongdoing.
Prostitution is legal in Colombia.

More than 200 pages of photos and eyewitness accounts released by prosecutors Thursday show he and Martin were in a loud and bloody fight in the moments leading up to the shooting and that Zimmerman appeared to be getting the worst of it, with wounds both to his face and the back of his head.
But the original lead detective in the case believed Zimmerman caused the fight by getting out of his vehicle to confront Martin, who wasn't doing anything criminal, and then could have defused the situation by telling Martin he was just a concerned citizen.

SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) - A Georgia graduate student fighting a rare flesh-eating bacterial infection has seen the severe damage to her hands and is accepting it without tears.
Aimee Copeland remained in critical condition at an Augusta hospital Wednesday, more than two weeks after she fell onto some rocks from a broken zip line. A gash in her leg developed into the infection.
Doctors had to amputate most of her left leg. Her father, Andy Copeland, says she will lose her fingers, too.
He says his daughter doesn't know that yet, but she has looked at her hands and asked about the damage.
Copeland is on a respirator. Doctors are removing the tube in her mouth and throat and replacing it with one inserted through her trachea to make her more comfortable.

A new exercise is being added, though. Local and state police will now practice for an attack on nearby nuclear plants.
These changes went into effect in December. While documented in obscure federal publications, the revamped rules received hardly any notice by the general public.

by AP

<VIDEO> WASHINGTON (AP) - The Obama administration is declaring Alzheimer's one of the country's biggest health challenges.
It's adopting a national strategy that sets the clock ticking toward better treatments by 2025 -- while offering help for suffering families.
A new website will provide families with information about dementia and where to get help in their own communities.
Announcing the first National Alzheimer's Plan, Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius (seh-BEEL'-yuhs) said "a lot more needs to be done and it needs to be done right now."
This summer, doctors and other health providers can start getting some free training on how to spot the early signs of Alzheimer's and the best ways to care for those patients.
Meanwhile, the National Institutes of health will spend an extra $50 million on Alzheimer's research this year. Among the new studies of possible therapies is a nasal spray that sends insulin straight to the brain. Some research has linked diabetes and Alzheimer's.
Already, 5.4 million Americans have Alzheimer's or related dementias. Without a research breakthrough, those numbers will jump by 2050, when up to 16 million Americans are expected to have Alzheimer's.

GREENSBORO, N.C. (AP) - Attorneys for John Edwards are indicating their case is winding down, but they are not yet saying whether they will call the former presidential candidate or his mistress to testify.
Defense attorneys said they would make a decision later Tuesday on whether to call Edwards and Rielle Hunter. It was not clear when they would make that decision public.
Testimony ended Tuesday for the day with the trial still focusing on financial records.
Edwards is accused of masterminding a plan to use about $1 million from two wealthy donors to hide his pregnant mistress as he ran for the White House in 2008. Edwards has pleaded not guilty to six counts of campaign finance violations. He faces up to 30 years in prison if convicted.

FRIENDSHIP, Maine (AP) - The sinking of two lobster boats is rekindling memories of hostilities among lobstermen three years ago that led to a near-fatal shooting, boats being sunk and a barrage of lobster trap vandalism along Maine's lobster-rich coast.
Someone this week sabotaged two lobster boats moored in Friendship harbor, causing them to flood with water and sink.
Investigators say they don't know if the sinkings were spurred by a personal vendetta or a territorial feud.
In 2009, hostilities among Maine lobstermen were especially in high gear.
On Matinicus Island, a lobsterman shot a fellow lobsterman in the neck in a dispute over lobster traps.
Two weeks later, somebody sank two lobster boats and partially sank a third in Owls Head.

The historic announcement, the first by any sitting U.S. president, is expected to give the polarizing social issue a more prominent role in the 2012 race for the White House.
Republican nominee apparent Mitt Romney was quick to disagree with the president. Romney, campaigning in Oklahoma, said he believes that "marriage is between a man and a woman."
Obama revealed his decision in an ABC News interview, which took place three days after Vice President Joe Biden said he was completely comfortable with the idea of gays marrying. It also occurred a day after voters in North Carolina, a potential fall battleground, approved a state constitutional amendment opposing same-sex unions.
Democratic supporters claim Obama's decision could energize huge swaths of the party, including young people.

<VIDEO> RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - North Carolina voters overwhelmingly passed a constitutional amendment that defines marriage as solely between a man and a woman, but not much is expected to change immediately.
That's because North Carolina law already banned gay marriage. The amendment voters passed Tuesday night by about 61 percent of voters effectively will seal the door on same-sex marriages and potentially have other effects farther down the road.
The amendment likely will affect issues other than gay marriage the most because the "marriage-plus" amendment approved in North Carolina prohibits not only same-sex marriage, but also same-sex civil unions.

U.S. officials say the unexploded bomb represents an intelligence prize, the result of a covert CIA operation in Yemen that thwarted a suicide mission in recent weeks.

Vice President Biden says he's now "absolutely comfortable" with same-sex marriage. But the White House says he's not out ahead of President Obama, who's said his own position on this issue is still "evolving."
Here's more on the story.
WASHINGTON (AP) - Education Secretary Arne Duncan, a member of President Barack Obama's Cabinet, says he supports gay marriage.
Duncan's position puts him in possible conflict with Obama, who has not publically backed same-sex marriage. Obama says his position on the matter is evolving.
In an interview Monday on MSNBC, Duncan was asked if he believes same-sex couples should be able to legally marry. He responded: "Yes, I do."
Duncan's revelation follows Vice President Joe Biden's assertion this weekend that he is "absolutely comfortable" with same-sex married couples getting the same rights at heterosexual married couples. Gay rights advocates interpreted Biden's words as an endorsement of gay marriage, while the White House insisted the vice president had not broken ranks with the president.

<VIDEO> WASHINGTON (AP) - U.S. employers pulled back on hiring in April for the second straight month, a sobering reminder that the economy remains weak. The unemployment rate fell to 8.1 percent, but only because more people gave up looking for work.
The Labor Department says employers added 115,000 jobs in April. That's below March's upwardly revised 154,000 jobs and far fewer than the pace from earlier this year.
The unemployment rate has fallen a full percentage point since August to a three-year low. But last month's decline was not due to job growth. The government only counts people as unemployed if they are actively looking for work.
In April, the percentage of adults working or looking for work fell to the lowest level in more than 30 years.

<VIDEO> GILBERT, Ariz. (AP) - Police in the Phoenix suburb of Gilbert now say they're not sure whether a man who fatally shot four people, including a toddler, committed suicide.
Police originally said the gunman killed himself Wednesday, but they now say they're not positive about that.
At a briefing for reporters, Gilbert police Sgt. Bill Balafas says all the evidence points to the shooting being a domestic violence situation. He didn't elaborate.
Authorities say the man was armed with several firearms, and officers recovered two handguns and a shotgun.
The gunman's identity and motives aren't immediately known.
Balafas says the genders and ages of the victims aren't known either, except for the toddler, a girl between 1 and 2 years old.
He says the girl was alive when authorities arrived, but she later died at a hospital.

<VIDEO> WASHINGTON (AP) - A new poll shows that Muslim majorities across five major countries have little good to say about al-Qaida one year after American commandos killed the terror group's leader.
Most of the views expressed by Muslims in Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Turkey and Pakistan were overwhelmingly negative in the poll conducted as part of the Pew Research Center's Global Attitudes Project, which was released Monday.
The organization cautioned that findings in Pakistan, where U.S. Navy SEALs killed Osama bin Laden on May 1, 2011, did not include responses from areas holding 18 percent of the population; these districts were considered too dangerous for pollsters to operate.
