Amish woman testifies bishop on trial forced sex

CLEVELAND (AP) - A woman says she left an Ohio Amish settlement because the bishop who's accused of orchestrating hair-cutting attacks last fall had been forcing her to have sex with him.

The woman told jurors hearing the hate crimes trial of 16 members of a breakaway Amish group that she left the eastern Ohio settlement four years ago because Sam Mullet Sr. was forcing her and others to have sex with him.

The woman says Mullet told her that he was trying to help her with her marriage.

Mullet is accused of organizing the hair-cutting attacks over religious differences among the Amish but is not charged with any sex-related crimes.

Prosecutors say the alleged sexual "counseling" of wives by Mullet shows the control he had over his followers.

Man sent to prison for Internet-based Ponzi scheme

WASHINGTON (AP) - A man who ran a Ponzi scheme disguised as an online advertising company has been sentenced to 78 months in prison.

Thomas Bowdoin, founder and operator of AdSurf Daily Inc., pleaded guilty to wire fraud after promising huge returns to tens of thousands of investors across the United States and abroad. The scheme generated more than $120 million.

Investors were to earn 125 percent on each dollar paid into ASD, as long as they viewed other members' websites for a few minutes each day on ASD's Internet page. Members were to receive recruiting commissions.

The pyramid-style business model relied on increasing investments of new money to pay debt owed to earlier investors. Bowdoin, 77, is from Quincy, Fla. He was sentenced Wednesday by U.S. District Judge Rosemary Collyer in Washington.

Prosecutors in Holmes case get university records

CENTENNIAL, Colo. (AP) - A judge in the Colorado theater shooting case has ordered that some of the suspect's educational records be released to prosecutors.

Arapahoe County District Court Judge William Sylvester ruled required that confidential information be blacked out.

At a hearing last week, prosecutors argued they needed copies of some 100 pages of educational records subpoenaed from the University of Colorado, where suspect James Holmes had been a neuroscience doctoral candidate.

Prosecutors say the documents are needed to build a case that would establish a motive for the July 20 shooting that killed 12 people and injured 58 others.

Attorneys for the state say that Holmes made threats, failed a key exam and had been encouraged by professors to seek another line of work in the weeks prior to the shooting.

FAA to study use of electronics on planes

It's going to be a while before airline passengers can use iPads and other electronic devices during the whole flight.

The Federal Aviation Administration says it's forming a committee to study the issue. But its plan suggests the committee's work won't be done until March at the earliest.

The committee will give a recommendation to the FAA, which will make the final decision about any changes. The FAA says allowing cell phone use during flights isn't under consideration.

Airlines currently ban electronic devices until the plane reaches 10,000 feet. They have to be put away before landing, too.

In March, the FAA raised hopes that it might loosen rules for electronic devices by saying it would study ways to test them.

Tropical Storm Isaac lashes northern Caribbean

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) - A new tropical storm -- named Joyce -- has formed in the eastern Atlantic. But it's no threat to land -- and the more immediate concern is Tropical Storm Isaac, which has already brought flooding to parts of Puerto Rico.

Forecasters say the storm is slowing down, and that will give it time to dump more rain on the island.

Isaac is churning up waves as high as 10 feet.

Forecasters say Isaac will likely turn into a Category 1 hurricane by tomorrow as it nears the Dominican Republic and Haiti. It's expected to weaken a little while heading over their island and Cuba, then possibly move on toward Florida as a hurricane by Monday.

FDA says Ind. farm tied to salmonella in melons
OWENSVILLE, Ind. (AP) - A farmer whose cantaloupes have been linked to a deadly salmonella outbreak says he voluntarily ceased production and has had no other problems at his southern Indiana farm since it began operating in 1982.

Tim Chamberlain says Chamberlain Farms in Owensville stopped producing and distributing melons on Aug. 16 when the Food and Drug Administration alerted him to a possible health risk. At least two people have died in the outbreak.

Chamberlain says he doesn't know the cause of the outbreak and that the farm is awaiting instruction from government agencies on what to do next. Owensville is about 20 miles north of Evansville.

FDA spokeswoman Shelly Burgess says Chamberlain Farms is not necessarily the sole source of the outbreak, saying an investigation is under way.

Rodney King death ruled accidental

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. (AP) - Southern California police say Rodney King's death has been ruled an accidental drowning.

Rialto police tell the San Bernardino Sun (bit.ly/OXVE3I) that the county medical examiner's report shows King had numerous drugs such as PCP, cocaine and marijuana in his system when he died in June.

The autopsy report is due to be released later Thursday.

A call from King's fiancee brought police officers to King's home in Rialto at 5:30 a.m. on June 17. The officers pulled the 47-year-old King from the bottom of his pool and he was pronounced dead at a hospital.

King was the black motorist severely beaten by Los Angeles police officers in 1991. The officers' acquittal on beating charges triggered the devastating 1992 Los Angeles riot.

DC Shooting May Have Stemmed from Issue with Organization
WASHINGTON (AP) - A law enforcement official says a suspected gunman made a negative reference about the work of a conservative Christian lobbying group before shooting a security guard.

The reference was made in a confrontation in the lobby of the Family Research Council in Washington Wednesday morning. The official spoke only on condition of anonymity because the investigation is ongoing.

Another law enforcement official identified the suspect as Floyd Corkins II. Authorities were interviewing neighbors in Corkins' neighborhood in Herndon, Va., on Wednesday evening.

After being shot in the arm, the security guard and others wrestled the suspect to the ground and he was arrested.

The Family Research Council strongly opposes gay marriage and abortion and says it advocates "faith, family and freedom in public policy and public opinion."

US Consumer Prices Flat for 3rd Time in 4 Months
WASHINGTON (AP) - US consumer prices were unchanged in July from June, as a small drop in energy costs offset slightly higher food prices. The consumer price index hasn't changed since March, evidence that the weak economy is keeping inflation in check.

The Labor Department says core consumer prices, which exclude volatile food and energy costs, ticked up 0.1 percent last month. More expensive medical costs, clothing and rents pushed up core prices.

Prices increased 1.4 percent in the 12 months ending in July. That's down from 1.7 percent in June and is the smallest yearly increase in 20 months. Core prices have increased 2.1 percent in the past year, down from a 2.2 percent pace in June.

Mild inflation gives the Federal Reserve more leeway to take steps to boost growth.

Judge Won't Halt Pa. Voter Identification Law
HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) - A Pennsylvania judge isn't stopping a tough new voter identification law from going into effect.

Commonwealth Court Judge Robert Simpson on Wednesday refused to grant an injunction that would have halted the law requiring each voter to show a valid photo ID. Opponents are expected to file a prompt appeal to the state Supreme Court as the Nov. 6 presidential election looms.

The law is the subject of a furious debate over voting rights. People challenging it include some who say they'll be unable to vote.

Democrats say the law will make it harder for the elderly, minorities, poor and young adults to vote, and is designed to help Republican challenger Mitt Romney beat Democratic President Barack Obama.

Republicans who control the Legislature and the governor's office say they think it'll prevent voter fraud.

US Industrial Production Rose 0.6 pct. in July
WASHINGTON (AP) - U.S. factories made more cars, computers and airplanes last month, a hopeful sign that manufacturing is recovering after a weak spring.

The Federal Reserve says U.S. industrial production increased 0.6 percent in July from June, the fourth straight monthly increase.

Factory output, the most important component of industrial production, rose 0.5 percent, the second straight increase. Factory output has risen 21.9 percent since its recession low hit in June 2009 and is just 1.7 percent below the pre-recession peak for factory output reached in July 2007.

Factory production slowed this spring and some feared it could weaken further in coming months Europe's financial crisis and slower global growth cut demand for U.S. exports.

Biden Draws Romney Rebuke With 'Chains' Remark

<VIDEO>      CHILLICOTHE, Ohio (AP) - Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney says Vice President Joe Biden's comment that Republicans would put voters "back in chains" is a sign of an "angry and desperate" presidency.

Romney plans to tell voters Tuesday night in Chillicothe, Ohio, that the vice president's comments represent an "outrageous charge" that disgraces the office of the presidency.

Biden made the comments earlier in the day in Danville, Va., while saying that  Republicans want to deregulate Wall Street - or, as Biden put it, to '"unchain Wall Street."

Hundreds of black people were in the audience when Biden added, "They're going to put y'all back in chains."

During a stop in Wytheville, Va., Biden said he meant to say "unshackled," but he did not apologize. Instead, he mocked the Romney campaign for its outrage.

Biden Decries Romney Criticism of 'Chains' Remark
WYTHEVILLE, Va. (AP) - A defiant Vice President Joe Biden is denouncing Republican criticism over his remarks to southern Virginia voters that presidential challenger Mitt Romney would put them "back in chains" but concedes he meant to use different words.

The campaign flap began after Biden told supporters in Danville, Va., that the Republican ticket wanted to "unchain Wall Street." He then added: "They're going to put y'all back in chains."

Biden, speaking later in Wytheville, says he had meant to use the term "unshackled."

Man Armed in Batman Movie Indicted on Gun Charges
CLEVELAND (AP) - An Ohio man arrested with a loaded gun, ammunition and knives at a showing of the latest Batman movie has been indicted on three weapons counts.

A Cleveland grand jury returned the indictment Monday against 37-year-old Scott A. Smith, of North Ridgeville, on two concealed weapon counts and one of having a weapon under disability, alleged drug dependency.

Bond was set earlier at $250,000. Arraignment was scheduled for Aug. 27.

Smith's attorney says his client had the weapons for protection in case someone tried to copy the Colorado theater shooting that left 12 dead. Defense attorney Matthew Bruce said Tuesday that Smith would challenge the dependency contention and ask for lower bond.

Smith was arrested an Aug. 4 showing of "The Dark Knight Rises" in Westlake.

Mystery of Mars Photo Solved
PASADENA, Calif. (AP) - The mysterious Mars photo has been solved.

A NASA engineer said Friday he's pretty sure a Curiosity rover camera caught the rocket stage crashing in the distance after it landed in Gale Crater Sunday night.

A grainy, black-and-white picture taken about 40 seconds after landing shows a plume of dust in the distance. It's not visible in a picture taken nearly an hour later.

The Internet was abuzz over the photo for days.

Curiosity touched down on Mars using a new landing technique. During the last few seconds, a rocket stage hovered and slowly lowered the six-wheel rover to the ground. The rocket stage then flew away and crashed.

Engineers say a preliminary reconstruction of the landing reveals everything went according to plan.

Loughner Pleads Guilty to Ariz. Shooting

<VIDEO>      TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) - Jared Lee Loughner has pleaded guilty to going on a rampage in Tucson, Ariz., that left six dead and wounded then-Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords and 12 others.

Loughner's plea Tuesday allows him to avoid the death penalty in a mass shooting that gained worldwide attention in January 2011 because his intended target was the congresswoman. Among the dead were Arizona's chief federal judge and a Giffords' aide.

Federal Judge Larry A. Burns had found that Loughner was mentally unfit to stand trial. He ruled on Tuesday that months of forcibly medicating him to treat his schizophrenia made him competent to understand the gravity of the charges against him and assist in his own defense.

Loughner is expected to be sentenced to life in prison without parole.

Raw Video: NASA Celebrates Mars Rover Landing

<VIDEO>      PASADENA, Calif. (AP) - Cheers and applause echoed through the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena on late Sunday after the robotic explorer Curiosity signaled it had survived a harrowing plunge through the thin Mars atmosphere.

The most high-tech interplanetary rover ever built touched down on the Martian surface inside of a giant crater after a tricky landing routine that included a series of braking tricks, a heat shield and a supersonic parachute.

The NASA engineer who led the team that devised the landing says the rover "landed in a nice flat spot." Adam Steltzner called the successful landing "really beautiful."

Within minutes of landing, Curiosity also beamed back the first black-and-white pictures from inside the crater showing its wheel and its shadow, cast by the afternoon sun.

Celebrations by the mission team were so joyous over the next hour that JPL Director Charles Elachi had to plead for calm in order to hold a post-landing press conference. He compared the team to athletic teams that participate in the Olympics.

Gunman, 6 Others Dead in Sikh Temple Attack

Then the shooting started, sending terrified congregants scrambling for cover.

When the gunfire finally ended Sunday in a shootout with a gunman and police outside the temple in suburban Milwaukee, seven people lay dead, including the suspect, and three others were critically wounded in what police called an act of domestic terrorism.

Federal authorities described the suspect as a white man in his 40s, but neither provided further details nor suggested a possible motive, including whether he specifically targeted the Sikh temple.

US Economy Adds 163K Jobs, Rate Rises to 8.3%
WASHINGTON (AP) - U.S. employers added 163,000 jobs in July, a hopeful sign after three months of sluggish hiring.

The Labor Department says the unemployment rate rose to 8.3 percent from 8.2 percent in June.

July's hiring was the best since February. Still, the economy has added an average of 151,000 jobs a month this year, roughly the same as last year's pace. That's not enough to satisfy the 12.8 million Americans who are unemployed.

The rate increased because the government uses two surveys: A survey of businesses showed job gains, but a survey of households showed fewer people had jobs. Economists say the business survey is more reliable.

High unemployment could hurt President Barack Obama's re-election hopes. No president since World War II has faced re-election with unemployment over 8 percent.
