CLEVELAND (AP) - A woman says she left an Ohio Amish settlement because the bishop who's accused of orchestrating hair-cutting attacks last fall had been forcing her to have sex with him.
The woman told jurors hearing the hate crimes trial of 16 members of a breakaway Amish group that she left the eastern Ohio settlement four years ago because Sam Mullet Sr. was forcing her and others to have sex with him.
The woman says Mullet told her that he was trying to help her with her marriage.
Mullet is accused of organizing the hair-cutting attacks over religious differences among the Amish but is not charged with any sex-related crimes.
Prosecutors say the alleged sexual "counseling" of wives by Mullet shows the control he had over his followers.

WASHINGTON (AP) - A man who ran a Ponzi scheme disguised as an online advertising company has been sentenced to 78 months in prison.
Thomas Bowdoin, founder and operator of AdSurf Daily Inc., pleaded guilty to wire fraud after promising huge returns to tens of thousands of investors across the United States and abroad. The scheme generated more than $120 million.
Investors were to earn 125 percent on each dollar paid into ASD, as long as they viewed other members' websites for a few minutes each day on ASD's Internet page. Members were to receive recruiting commissions.
The pyramid-style business model relied on increasing investments of new money to pay debt owed to earlier investors. Bowdoin, 77, is from Quincy, Fla. He was sentenced Wednesday by U.S. District Judge Rosemary Collyer in Washington.

CENTENNIAL, Colo. (AP) - A judge in the Colorado theater shooting case has ordered that some of the suspect's educational records be released to prosecutors.
Arapahoe County District Court Judge William Sylvester ruled required that confidential information be blacked out.
At a hearing last week, prosecutors argued they needed copies of some 100 pages of educational records subpoenaed from the University of Colorado, where suspect James Holmes had been a neuroscience doctoral candidate.
Prosecutors say the documents are needed to build a case that would establish a motive for the July 20 shooting that killed 12 people and injured 58 others.
Attorneys for the state say that Holmes made threats, failed a key exam and had been encouraged by professors to seek another line of work in the weeks prior to the shooting.

FAA to study use of electronics on planes
by AP

posted Aug 27 2012 4:13PM

It's going to be a while before airline passengers can use iPads and other electronic devices during the whole flight.
The Federal Aviation Administration says it's forming a committee to study the issue. But its plan suggests the committee's work won't be done until March at the earliest.
The committee will give a recommendation to the FAA, which will make the final decision about any changes. The FAA says allowing cell phone use during flights isn't under consideration.
Airlines currently ban electronic devices until the plane reaches 10,000 feet. They have to be put away before landing, too.
In March, the FAA raised hopes that it might loosen rules for electronic devices by saying it would study ways to test them.

WASHINGTON (AP) - US consumer prices were unchanged in July from June, as a small drop in energy costs offset slightly higher food prices. The consumer price index hasn't changed since March, evidence that the weak economy is keeping inflation in check.
The Labor Department says core consumer prices, which exclude volatile food and energy costs, ticked up 0.1 percent last month. More expensive medical costs, clothing and rents pushed up core prices.
Prices increased 1.4 percent in the 12 months ending in July. That's down from 1.7 percent in June and is the smallest yearly increase in 20 months. Core prices have increased 2.1 percent in the past year, down from a 2.2 percent pace in June.
Mild inflation gives the Federal Reserve more leeway to take steps to boost growth.

Commonwealth Court Judge Robert Simpson on Wednesday refused to grant an injunction that would have halted the law requiring each voter to show a valid photo ID. Opponents are expected to file a prompt appeal to the state Supreme Court as the Nov. 6 presidential election looms.
The law is the subject of a furious debate over voting rights. People challenging it include some who say they'll be unable to vote.
Democrats say the law will make it harder for the elderly, minorities, poor and young adults to vote, and is designed to help Republican challenger Mitt Romney beat Democratic President Barack Obama.
Republicans who control the Legislature and the governor's office say they think it'll prevent voter fraud.

Factory output, the most important component of industrial production, rose 0.5 percent, the second straight increase. Factory output has risen 21.9 percent since its recession low hit in June 2009 and is just 1.7 percent below the pre-recession peak for factory output reached in July 2007.
Factory production slowed this spring and some feared it could weaken further in coming months Europe's financial crisis and slower global growth cut demand for U.S. exports.

Romney plans to tell voters Tuesday night in Chillicothe, Ohio, that the vice president's comments represent an "outrageous charge" that disgraces the office of the presidency.
Biden made the comments earlier in the day in Danville, Va., while saying that Republicans want to deregulate Wall Street - or, as Biden put it, to '"unchain Wall Street."
Hundreds of black people were in the audience when Biden added, "They're going to put y'all back in chains."
During a stop in Wytheville, Va., Biden said he meant to say "unshackled," but he did not apologize. Instead, he mocked the Romney campaign for its outrage.

Bond was set earlier at $250,000. Arraignment was scheduled for Aug. 27.

PASADENA, Calif. (AP) - The mysterious Mars photo has been solved.
A NASA engineer said Friday he's pretty sure a Curiosity rover camera caught the rocket stage crashing in the distance after it landed in Gale Crater Sunday night.
A grainy, black-and-white picture taken about 40 seconds after landing shows a plume of dust in the distance. It's not visible in a picture taken nearly an hour later.
The Internet was abuzz over the photo for days.
Curiosity touched down on Mars using a new landing technique. During the last few seconds, a rocket stage hovered and slowly lowered the six-wheel rover to the ground. The rocket stage then flew away and crashed.
Engineers say a preliminary reconstruction of the landing reveals everything went according to plan.

Then the shooting started, sending terrified congregants scrambling for cover.
When the gunfire finally ended Sunday in a shootout with a gunman and police outside the temple in suburban Milwaukee, seven people lay dead, including the suspect, and three others were critically wounded in what police called an act of domestic terrorism.
Federal authorities described the suspect as a white man in his 40s, but neither provided further details nor suggested a possible motive, including whether he specifically targeted the Sikh temple.

US Economy Adds 163K Jobs, Rate Rises to 8.3%

WASHINGTON (AP) - U.S. employers added 163,000 jobs in July, a hopeful sign after three months of sluggish hiring.
The Labor Department says the unemployment rate rose to 8.3 percent from 8.2 percent in June.
July's hiring was the best since February. Still, the economy has added an average of 151,000 jobs a month this year, roughly the same as last year's pace. That's not enough to satisfy the 12.8 million Americans who are unemployed.
The rate increased because the government uses two surveys: A survey of businesses showed job gains, but a survey of households showed fewer people had jobs. Economists say the business survey is more reliable.
High unemployment could hurt President Barack Obama's re-election hopes. No president since World War II has faced re-election with unemployment over 8 percent.

<VIDEO> LITCHFIELD, Ill. (AP) - A 25-year-old passenger who died in the crash of a double-decker Megabus in Illinois was a native of India traveling to central Missouri.
Aditi R. Avhad was headed to Columbia, Mo., when the bus slammed into an interstate bridge support pillar Thursday near Litchfield. Dozens were sent to hospitals with injuries. It's not clear how many remained hospitalized early Friday.

Some hospital officials said early Friday they still were treating patients, though none were reporting any of the injuries to be life-threatening.
Troopers had reported that 38 people were taken to hospitals for injuries.
