Knee Replacements on the Rise
CHICAGO (AP) - Just like baby boomers, older folks have seen a surge in knee replacements.

The findings are from a study of more than 3 million Medicare patients who got artificial knees over two decades. The number of initial knee-replacements done each year more than doubled during that time.

There were nearly 244,000 in 2010. The study authors say the increase is partly driven by a desire to stay active and by obesity, which takes a toll on joints. The aging population and rising numbers of Medicare enrollees also contributed.

The pace of growth slowed in more recent years - possibly because increasing numbers of younger adults have also been getting artificial knees.

The study appears in Wednesday's Journal of the American Medical Association.

Prints Being Taken of Colorado Theater Shooting Suspect
CENTENNIAL, Colo. (AP) - A Colorado judge has ordered authorities to collect a palm print and DNA sample from the Aurora theater shooting suspect.

Arapahoe County District Judge William B. Sylvester issued his order Tuesday. Prosecutors argued Thursday that they needed the print from 24-year-old James Holmes to compare with a print found on the inside of a theater exit door, as well as a DNA sample for comparing with other evidence collected by investigators.

Holmes is charged with 152 counts in the July shooting that killed 12 people and wounded 58 others.

On Friday, Sylvester denied Holmes' attorneys' request for sanctions against prosecutors for "reckless disregard for the truth" for statements about threats and being banned from a university campus.

Sylvester issued his order after prosecutors said they submitted evidence supporting their claims.

Romney Donor Video Shakes Up Presidential Race
WASHINGTON (AP) - GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney tells donors in a newly released video clip that Palestinians "have no interest" in peace with Israel.

The remarks are contained in a video clip posted Tuesday on the website of the magazine Mother Jones. The editors say the video is from a $50,000-a-plate fundraiser in Boca Raton, Fla., on May 17.

In the latest clip, Romney is asked about the "Palestinian problem." He gives a rambling response, then says "the Palestinians have no interest whatsoever in establishing peace," and "the pathway to peace is almost unthinkable to accomplish."

In another portion of the video released Monday, Romney says almost half of Americans "believe that they are victims." Late Monday, Romney did not dispute the clip but said his remarks were "not elegantly stated."

Americans Spend More on Gas and Less on Clothes
WASHINGTON (AP) - Higher gas prices account for much of the increase in consumer spending for August.

Spending was up by 0.9 percent -- but not counting the impact of gas prices and an increase in auto sales, there was just a tenth-of-a-point increase.

Gas prices are up by more than 50 cents a gallon in the past two months, with the national average reaching $3.87 a gallon today. And since the stimulus measures announced by the Federal Reserve are pushing oil prices up, gas prices could rise some more -- putting more of a crimp on consumer spending.

Consumers spent less in August on clothing and electronics, and at general merchandise outlets. Those are discretionary purchases that typically signal confidence in the economy.

Chris Christopher, an economist at HIS Global Insight, says, "Consumers were not willing to spend much at the mall since they are feeling the pump price pinch."

U.S. Braces for More Protests Across Muslim Road
WASHINGTON (AP) - U.S. officials are bracing for possible protests across the Muslim world over an anti-Islam film blamed on an attack in Libya that killed a U.S. ambassador and three other Americans.

With angry protests already occurring in Egypt and Yemen, the U.S. has put all of its diplomatic missions on high alert. And Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton has denounced the anti-Islam video in hopes of pre-empting further turmoil.

U.S. officials say there's was no indication the attack on the U.S. Consulate in Libya was planned, but they are investigating whether a Libyan-based militant group was responsible for turning the protest violent.

Dry Northwest burns as fire season in West extends

WENATCHEE, Wash. (AP) - A haze of thick smoke is building over vast swaths of the West as wildfires force more residents to evacuate their homes in several states.

Fire officials say seven homes have burned and hundreds of people have been evacuated near Casper, Wyo., where a wildfire has burned almost 24 square miles. In western Montana, fire crews say there is no containment in sight for a blaze that has prompted evacuation orders for 400 homes west of Hamilton.

With winds dying down, fire crews in eastern Washington are hopeful they can gain ground on dozens of fires sparked by weekend lightning storms. But more evacuation orders were issued Tuesday as a wildfire spread in the hills west of Wenatchee.

Residents of nearly 120 homes were evacuated due to the fire burning about 140 miles east of Seattle.

Union: No deal as talks continue

CHICAGO (AP) - The Chicago Teachers Union says no deal has been reached in ongoing talks with negotiators from the Chicago Public Schools.

Representatives from the union and the district returned to the bargaining table Tuesday as the teachers' strike entered its second day. More than 25,000 teachers are on strike for the first time in a quarter century.

In a statement Tuesday afternoon, union spokeswoman Stephanie Gadlin says the CTU has signed off on only six of the 49 articles in its contract. She says the negotiations still "have a considerable way to go."

Gadlin says Tuesday's contract talks have included discussions of proposed evaluation procedures. That's been one of the most contentious issues, along with recall rights for laid-off teachers.

House passes bill to strengthen FHA

WASHINGTON (AP) - The House has passed legislation to strengthen the financial position of the Federal Housing Administration, a key source of financing for low-income and first-time homebuyers.

The measure would set a minimum rate for the annual premiums paid for mortgage insurance, exclude unscrupulous lenders from the program and require those who commit fraud to repay the FHA.

The reserve fund of the FHA, which insures more than $1 trillion worth of mortgages, is near depletion.

The bill, sponsored by Republican Rep. Judy Biggert of Illinois, sets the minimum rate at 0.55 percent of the mortgage balance and gives the housing secretary discretion to raise that to 2.05 percent.

Last December Congress agreed to raise the FHA's mortgage insurance premium to pay for a temporary extension of the payroll tax cut.

For Sept. 11 Anniversary, A Turning Point Passed?
NEW YORK (AP) - As the sun rose over the World Trade Center on the anniversary of the terrorist attacks, the neighborhood around ground zero seemed more normal than in previous years, with fewer police barricades and commuters rushing out of the subway.

At the southwest corner of ground zero, a lineup of airport-style metal detectors has been set up to clear visitors entering the ceremony.

The detectors are several hundred feet from Engine 10 and Ladder 10, and the company's dozens of firefighters are preparing for the ceremony.

Engine 10 lost five members on Sept. 11, 2001.

Circling the complex were police and fire department vehicles, ambulances and metal barriers protecting the site where victim's families will gather and grieve Tuesday.

Obama, Romney plunge into 60-day race to election

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - Sixty days to the election, President Barack Obama is charging onto the campaign trail pleading for patience from hard-pressed Americans toying with the notion of change, and portraying Republican rival Mitt Romney as unproven.

Obama and Romney are shadowing each other Friday in New Hampshire and Iowa, improbable battleground states in the too-close-to-call race. The campaigning was sure to be dominated by a new report from the Labor Department on the nation's jobless.

Romney and the Republicans argue that three years of unemployment above 8 percent and minimal economic growth are valid reasons to fire Obama after one term.

Obama says that, having inherited one of the worst economic crises in history, he needs more time to turn the nation around.

Attention now turns to Peterson's 3rd wife

JOLIET, Ill. (AP) - Now that Drew Peterson has been convicted of murdering his third wife, attention turns to the disappearance of his fourth.

Stacy Peterson loomed over the former Illinois police officer's trial for killing Kathleen Savio. Still, that she had disappeared and the suspicion that Drew Peterson killed her was never mentioned in front of the jury.

Will County State's Attorney James Glasgow stopped short Thursday of saying his office will charge the former officer in the Stacy Peterson case. But he came close.

He told reporters prosecutors are "going to aggressively review that case with an eye towards potentially charging it."

Drew Peterson was only charged in Savio's 2004 death after Stacy Peterson vanished in 2007. Authorities say she's presumed dead and her husband is the only suspect in her disappearance.

Subject of jet explosives hoax arrested in Texas

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - A man on a Dallas-bound flight was deemed the unassuming victim of a midair explosives hoax that forced the plane to return to Philadelphia, where he was arrested at gunpoint. Hours later, the man who had planned to celebrate his 29th birthday was arrested in Texas on outstanding warrants.

Authorities say the initial scare Thursday was a hoax after searching the US Airways jet and questioning the man, who did nothing wrong and was the victim of a nasty trick. Police say they were acting on a tip.

Officials didn't name the man. But, Philadelphia resident Christopher Shell identified himself in a phone call with The Associated Press as the passenger removed from the plane.

Shell was arrested later Thursday on outstanding warrants after arriving Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport. Airport spokesman David Magana said the warrants are from North Texas law enforcement agencies.

Mo. bishop faces bench trial in case tied to abuse
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - A Missouri judge will try a misdemeanor case against the highest-ranking Catholic official in the U.S. to be charged with shielding an abusive priest, three weeks before it was scheduled to go to a jury trial.

Bishop Robert Finn and the Catholic Diocese of Kansas City-St. Joseph were supposed to stand trial starting Sept. 24, but prosecutors announced Wednesday that the case would instead be heard Thursday.

Both Finn and the diocese have pleaded not guilty to failure to report suspected child abuse to the state.

Jackson County, Mo., prosecutors and attorneys for the bishop and diocese have negotiated a set of stipulated facts that will be presented to Judge John M. Torrence.

A spokesman for the prosecutor's office says a verdict is expected by day's end.

Calif. treasurer's wife arrest for drug possession

ORANGE, Calif. (AP) - California prosecutors say the estranged wife of state Treasurer Bill Lockyer has been charged with drug possession and child abuse after police found her with methamphetamine at a relative's house in Orange County where she was staying with her 9-year-old son.

The charges against Nadia Lockyer are the latest in a series of substance and relationship struggles faced by the former Alameda County supervisor.

A district attorney spokeswoman says police in Orange received a tip last week leading them to the house. Lockyer wasn't home, but police found methamphetamine and smoking paraphernalia.

She was arrested the same day when police found her and she appeared to have been using meth.

Lockyer pleaded not guilty in August to three drug-related charges and one child abuse charge.

Judge may order Fort Hood suspect's beard shaved

FORT HOOD, Texas (AP) - A judge is expected to order the Army psychiatrist charged in the deadly 2009 Fort Hood shooting rampage to have his beard shaved.

Col. Gregory Gross said he will issue the order this week for Maj. Nidal Hasan.

But Hasan is allowed to appeal, which would trigger another delay in his upcoming murder trial.

Gross will preside Thursday over a hearing to determine how a federal religious freedom law applies in the case.

Gross is expected to rule the law doesn't trump Army regulations designed to maintain order and discipline - including the ban on beards.

Hasan says he grew a beard because his Muslim faith requires it.

Hasan faces the death penalty if convicted in the attack that killed 13 on the Texas Army post.

Hundreds Raised Following Sikh Temple Shooting
OAK CREEK, Wis. (AP) - Officials at a Sikh temple in suburban Milwaukee are treading carefully as they figure out how to distribute hundreds of thousands of dollars in donations that poured in after last month's deadly shooting rampage.

The donations are expected to total between $500,000 and $600,000. Money will be given to families of the six worshippers killed and the two injured.

However, deciding who gets how much money can lead to in-fighting, as has happened elsewhere.

So temple leaders sought the advice of a consultant who directed victims' payments after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. Ken Feinberg recommended that all the dead victims' survivors get equal amounts, even though one victim was 84. He says that's fairest.

Temple officials say they'll proceed slowly to make sure all parties are treated justly.

Isaac Stirs Up Oil Spilled in 2010
NEW ORLEANS (AP) - BP says Hurricane Isaac's scouring waves exposed deposits of buried tar on the Louisiana coast that were left over from its massive oil spill in 2010.

Louisiana officials closed a stretch of beach near Fourchon on Tuesday after scouts said they found large tar mats. BP acknowledged Wednesday the oil was from its spill.

Ray Melick, a BP PLC spokesman, said in an email that "as this area has undergone severe coastal erosion by Hurricane Isaac, much of the oil has now been exposed."

He says the company was working with the Coast Guard, state officials and land managers to clean up the exposed oil.

Since Isaac's surge has receded, tar balls and oil have been reported in Alabama and Louisiana on beaches that previously had appeared clean.

US productivity grew at 2.2 pct. rate in spring
WASHINGTON (AP) - U.S. companies got more output from their workers this spring than initially thought. The modest gain may mean that hiring could stay sluggish this year.

The Labor Department says productivity increased at an annual rate of 2.2 percent in the April-June quarter, up from an initial estimate of a 1.6 percent gain. Labor costs rose at an annual rate of 1.5 percent, slightly lower than the 1.7 percent initially estimated.

The government said the economy grew at an annual rate of 1.7 percent in the April-June quarter, up slightly from an initial estimate of 1.5 percent. The increase led to higher productivity gains because productivity is the amount of output per hour worked.

Rising productivity can also slow job creation if it means companies are getting more from their current staff and don't need to add workers.

Smooth path seen to renewal of disaster aid

WASHINGTON (AP) - Negotiations on Capitol Hill appear likely to ensure a smooth flow of disaster aid in the wake of Hurricane Isaac despite some sniping on the presidential campaign trail.

Congressional aides are working quietly on a six-month government funding bill that would prevent a shutdown of the government next month and ensure that the government's main disaster relief program gets a steady flow of money.

It's a different story from a year ago, when inadequate Federal Emergency Management Agency funding and slew of expensive disasters combined to almost drain the government's main disaster program dry.

Police analyze PCP after 2 NJ children killed

CAMDEN, N.J. (AP) - Police are trying to determine if a contaminated batch of PCP is going around Camden after a child was decapitated and two other children's throats were slashed by people believed to be using the illegal drug.

They've begun analyzing batches of PCP for something that would cause such violent behavior.

A 6-year-old boy was killed Sunday trying to save his 12-year-old sister when they were assaulted in their home. Police say both were asleep when someone cut his throat then attacked his sister.

Police say the man charged, Oswaldo Rivera, admitted he smoked PCP in the hours before the attack.

Also preliminary tests on a woman who decapitated her child then killed herself showed she had PCP in her system.

Claim Disputed that Apple Device Owner's Personal Information was Stolen
WASHINGTON (AP) - The FBI is disputing a computer hacker group's claim that it stole personal identification data on millions of Apple device owners from an FBI agent's laptop.

The FBI says it never asked for and never possessed the database that the group, which calls itself AntiSec, is posting on a website.

The group released a link to a database of more than 1 million Apple device identification numbers.

Federal officials are warning that computer users should be careful when clicking on such links because they may sometimes contain malware that can infect computers.

AntiSec is a hacker group affiliated with Anonymous, a collection of Internet-savvy activists who have struck out against governments, officials or corporations over a variety of political grievances.

Apple did not respond to repeated requests for comment.

Sale of Facebook Shares to be Halted
NEW YORK (AP) - Facebook says CEO Mark Zuckerberg won't sell stock in the company for at least the next 12 months.

It's also saying that Facebook's rank-and-file employees can start selling stock they own on Oct. 29. That was disclosed in a regulatory filing Tuesday.

Facebook says it's withholding about 101 million shares from its employee stock units to cover taxes they will incur at a rate of about 45 percent. It will then pay the tax obligations, currently estimated at around $1.9 billion, cash and credit.

Facebook's stock fell to $17.55 in Tuesday trading, its lowest point ever, and closed down 33 cents at $17.73.

Chrysler sales rise 14 pct on demand for pickups

DETROIT (AP) - Chrysler says its U.S. sales rose 14 percent last month as the Ram pickup truck had its best August in five years.

The results are a sign that car and truck sales will remain strong despite consumers' worries about the economy.

Chrysler says it sold more than 148,000 vehicles in August. It sold more than 25,000 Ram pickups, an increase of 19 percent over August of last year.

Wildfire grows

GLENDORA, Calif. (AP) - About 300 firefighters are on the ground, while half a dozen water-dropping helicopters and a DC-10 tanker are in the air battling a wildfire in the Angeles National Forest northeast of Los Angeles.

The blaze broke out near a campground yesterday, forcing the evacuation of thousands of campers and picnickers. It's grown to more than 4,100 acres, or roughly 6 square miles. Fire officials estimate it is just five percent contained.

Crews are getting some help from the weather, with only light winds blowing. The flames are moving deeper into a wilderness area away from any structures.

The cause is under investigation.

Meanwhile, firefighters quickly contained another wildfire shortly after it broke out yesterday in Ventura County in the Los Padres National Forest.

And in Northern California, firefighters are focusing on the rugged and remote northern edge of a fire that's been burning for weeks in Mendocino County. More than 1,600 firefighters are trying to contain the blaze. It's burned more than 65 square miles and is about 58 percent contained.

35 years later, Voyager 1 is heading for the stars

PASADENA, Calif. (AP) - Thirty-five years after leaving Earth, the Voyager 1 spacecraft is reaching for the stars.

Voyager 1 is poised to exit the solar system and enter the space between stars. When that will happen isn't clear. But scientists say there have been signs that it is on the verge of crossing over.

It will be the first manmade object to leave the solar system.

Voyager 1 and its twin, Voyager 2, were launched in 1977 on a mission to tour Jupiter and Saturn. No one knew how long they'd live.

Voyager 2 went on to explore Uranus and Neptune. Voyager 1 used Saturn to fling itself toward the solar system's edge.

Wednesday marks the 35th anniversary of Voyager 1's launch.

Oil and Gas Hub Return After Isaac
The nation's oil and gas hub along the Gulf Coast is slowly coming back to life in the aftermath of Hurricane Isaac.

The government said Monday that 800,000 barrels per day of oil production remained offline, 58 percent of Gulf of Mexico production. At the height of the storm 1.3 million barrels per day of oil production was suspended.

Nine refineries in the path of Isaac are restarting or operating at reduced rates. One refinery has returned to full operation and one, the Belle Chasse, La., refinery operated by Phillips 66, is still shut down because it is still without power.

The national average price of gasoline rose 11 cents last week. By Friday the price had leveled off and Monday they declined slightly to $2.827 per gallon.

GOP Convention Viewership Drops
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - TV viewership for last week's Republican National Convention dropped sharply from 2008.

But the convention was a hit online and on social networks, the latest evidence of the political conversation's gradual migration from traditional media to the Web.

There are many reasons this year's conventions may be less compelling than in 2008. Four years ago was a historic election that saw Democrat Barack Obama become the first black presidential nominee and then-Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin emerge as Republican Party star.

Hurricane Isaac drew at least some attention away from the largely surprise-free GOP gathering in Tampa, Fla., last week.

Little news also is expected at this week's Democratic convention in Charlotte, N.C., where Obama will be nominated for a second term.

3 family members fatally stabbed near Nashville
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Authorities say a man suspected of fatally stabbing a woman, her teen-aged son and her mother in their Nashville suburban home apparently lived nearby.

Police spokesman Don Aaron said that the bodies of 48-year-old Michelle Pinkowski; her son, 14-year-old Jonathan Culpepper, and her mother, Marylea Jordan, were discovered around 3 a.m. Sunday at the Bellevue home.

Police said the boy's 9-year-old sister witnessed at least one of the killings before running out of the house and getting a neighbor to call authorities.

Aaron said that when officers arrived at the home, a bloodied Craig Garber answered the door and told officers, "Just kill me".

Police said the 41-year-old Garber had self-inflicted stab wounds and was known to have "emotional issues." He is listed in stable condition at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.
