Alert Ends at Nuclear Plant in NJ
by AP

|
ATLANTA (AP) - A nuclear power plant in New Jersey is no longer under an alert caused by superstorm Sandy.
The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission said an alert at the Oyster Creek plant in Forked River, N.J., ended early Wednesday. An alert is the second-lowest designation in a four-tiered warning system.
The alert was triggered as water rose outside the plant, threatening cooling equipment. NRC officials said water levels had since fallen and were still dropping. The plant, which was offline before the storm, also regained offsite power after losing it.
Storm-related complications were blamed for forcing reactors off line at Nine Mile Point Unit 1 near Syracuse, N.Y., the Indian Point Unit 3 north of New York City and the Salem plant's Unit 1 on the Delaware River in New Jersey.

NEW YORK (AP) - The head of Apple's iPhone software development was asked to resign after he refused to sign a letter apologizing for the flaws of Apple's mapping application, according to a published report.
The Wall Street Journal says Scott Forstall's refusal was the latest clash between him and other executives, and led to the company's announcement Monday that he is stepping down and leaving the company next year.
Forstall's unit was responsible for the Maps application, which was unfavorably compared to the Google Maps app it replaced.
Apple also announced the immediate departure of John Browett, a British retail executive who took over Apple's stores in April.

At least 13 US deaths blamed on Superstorm Sandy
by AP

|
ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (AP) - At least 13 U.S. deaths are being blamed on Superstorm Sandy, which has knocked out power to an estimated 5.2 million people across the East.
Sandy slammed into the New Jersey coastline with 80 mph winds Monday night and hurled an unprecedented 13-foot surge of seawater at New York City, flooding its tunnels, subway stations and the electrical system that powers Wall Street.
But for New York City, Sandy was not the dayslong onslaught many had feared, and the wind and rain that sent water sloshing into Manhattan began dying down within hours. The full extent of the storm's damage across the region is unclear, and unlikely to be known until daybreak.
Heavy rain and further flooding remain major threats over the next couple of days as the storm makes its way into Pennsylvania and up into New York State. Near midnight, the center of the storm was just outside Philadelphia, and its winds were down to 75 mph, just barely hurricane strength.

Romney Calls Economic Growth Report Discouraging
by AP

posted Oct 26 2012 10:35AM

WASHINGTON (AP) - Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney says a new report on the nation's economic growth is "discouraging."
The Commerce Department reported Friday that the U.S. economy expanded at a slightly faster 2 percent annual rate from July through September. But Romney suggested that pickup wasn't sufficient to create enough jobs and improve take-home pay. He argued he would do better.
The report comes as the GOP nominee prepared to deliver an economic speech in the swing state of Iowa.
Romney is focusing on the public's economic concerns heading into the final days of the campaign as polls suggest Americans say they trust him more than President Barack Obama to handle the issue.

WASHINGTON (AP) - The U.S. economy expanded at a slightly faster 2 percent annual rate from July through September, buoyed by an uptick in consumer spending and a burst of government spending.
The Commerce Department says growth improved from the 1.3 percent rate in the April-June quarter.
The pickup in growth may help President Barack Obama's message that the economy is improving. Still, growth remains too weak to rapidly boost hiring. And the 1.74 percent rate for 2012 trails last year's 1.8 percent growth, a point GOP nominee Mitt Romney will emphasize.
The report is the last snapshot of economic growth before Americans choose a president in 11 days.
Growth was held back by the first drop in exports in more than three years and flat business investment in equipment and software.

BOSTON (AP) - The Massachusetts pharmacy linked to a meningitis outbreak that has claimed 23 lives around the country was cleared by state regulators following an inspection last year.
The May 24, 2011, inspection wasn't the result of any complaint against New England Compounding Center. It was required because the company was planning to update its facilities and move into new space within its facility in Framingham.
The inspection was performed before the move to the new space.
The inspection report, released to The Associated Press following a public records request, shows the company received a satisfactory grade. The inspector, William Frisch, toured the facility and reviewed security, controlled substance management, sterile and non-sterile processing areas and refrigeration.
The outbreak tied to contaminated steroid shots has sickened nearly 300 people.

HAGERSTOWN, Md. (AP) - The U.S. Food and Drug Administration says it's investigating reports of five deaths and a non-fatal heart attack linked to highly caffeinated Monster Energy Drinks.
The agency acknowledged the adverse reports Monday, but FDA spokeswoman Shelly Burgess says they don't prove that the drinks caused the deaths.
The news follows last week's filing in California of a wrongful death suit by the parents of a 14-year-old, Hagerstown, Md., girl who died after drinking two, 24-ounce Monster Beverage Corp. drinks in 24 hours.
An autopsy concluded she died of cardiac arrhythmia due to caffeine toxicity. She had an inherited disorder that can weaken blood vessels.
Monster says it doesn't believe its products caused any deaths.
Shares of the Corona, Calif.-based company plunged $7.20, or 13.5 percent, to $46.12 in trading Monday.

Eighteen-year-old Aaron Fisher is known in court papers as Victim 1. He tells People magazine he's coming forward with a book to tell other victims it's better to tell people about abuse than remain silent. He says Sandusky's victims "had a very long battle to see justice done."
Sandusky was convicted in June on charges he abused 10 boys. He maintains his innocence.
Fisher testified against Sandusky. His book comes out next week. He's expected to appear on ABC on Friday.
The police investigation that led to charges against Sandusky began after Fisher and his mother alerted school officials in 2008.

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. (AP) - President Barack Obama and Republican Mitt Romney sparred Tuesday with passion and grit in a debate that previewed the closing arguments of a campaign that keeps circling back to bedrock questions about which candidate can do more to strengthen the fragile economy.
With just three weeks left in the race, the candidates fan out in all directions Wednesday to pitch their tuned-up messages directly to voters on some of the campaign's most treasured turf: Romney in Virginia, Obama in Iowa.
It was a re-energized Obama who showed up for Thursday's town hall-style debate at Hofstra University, lifting the spirits of Democrats who felt let down by the president's limp performance in the candidates' first encounter two weeks ago. But Romney knew what was coming and didn't give an inch.

Fares to Raise on Southwest Airlines Flights

DALLAS (AP) - Southwest Airlines is making a 180-degree turn and raising fares on many routes by up to $10 per round trip.
The self-proclaimed low-fare airline declined to match a $10 increase by United Airlines earlier this week, helping force United to roll back prices.
But on Friday, Southwest raised fares $2 each way for trips under 501 miles, $3 each way for 501 to 1,000 miles, and $5 each way for longer trips.
Brad Hawkins, a spokesman for Dallas-based Southwest Airlines Co., says the reason is simple: The airline's costs are rising.
J.P. Morgan analyst Jamie Baker says Southwest started by raising prices on a limited number of flights, then broadened the increase and included flights by its AirTran Airways subsidiary. He expects most other airlines will match it by Saturday.

BELLEFONTE, Pa. (AP) - Jerry Sandusky has been sentenced to at least 30 years in prison in the child sexual abuse scandal that brought shame to Penn State and led to coach Joe Paterno's downfall.
The sentence means the 68-year-old former Penn State assistant coach will be in prison at least until he's nearly 100 years old.
Judge John Cleland issued the sentence Tuesday, three months after a jury convicted Sandusky on 45 counts of child sexual abuse.
Sandusky maintains his innocence and plans to appeal, a process his lawyer has said will probably begin in the coming weeks.
Sandusky is professing his innocence, says he is not a monster and says he didn't do the "alleged disgusting acts."

US Jobless Rate Falls to 7.8 Pct., 44-month Low

<VIDEO> WASHINGTON (AP) -- The U.S. unemployment rate fell to 7.8 percent last month, dropping below 8 percent for the first time in nearly four years. The rate declined because more people found work, a trend that could have an impact on undecided voters in the final month before the presidential election.
The Labor Department said Friday that employers added 114,000 jobs in September. The economy also created 86,000 more jobs in July and August than first estimated. Wages rose in September and more people started looking for work.
The revisions show employers added 146,000 jobs per month from July through September, up from 67,000 in the previous three months. The unemployment rate fell from 8.1 percent in August, matching its level in January 2009 when President Barack Obama took office.
The decline could help Obama, who is coming off a disappointing debate performance against GOP challenger Mitt Romney.
Stock futures rose modestly after the report. Dow Jones industrial average futures, up 30 points just before the report came out, were up 45 points after it was released.
The yield on the 10-year U.S. Treasury note climbed to 1.73 percent from 1.68 percent just before the report, a sign that investors were more willing to embrace risk and moving money from bonds into stocks.
The job market has been improving, sluggishly but steadily. Jobs have been added for 24 straight months. There are now 325,000 more than when Obama took office.
The September gains were led by the health care industry, which added 44,000 jobs — the most since February. Transportation and warehousing also showed large gains. The revisions showed that governments actually added 63,000 jobs in July and August, compared with earlier estimates that showed losses.
Still, many of the jobs added last month were part time. The number of people with part-time jobs who wanted full-time work rose 7.5 percent to 8.6 million.

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) - A judge is postponing Pennsylvania's tough new voter identification requirement, ordering that it not be enforced in the presidential election.
Tuesday's ruling comes just five weeks before the election. An appeal is possible. The 6-month-old law requires each voter to show a valid photo ID.
Democrats and groups including the AARP and NAACP mounted a furious opposition to a law Republicans say is necessary to prevent election fraud. Critics have accused Republicans of using old-fashioned Jim Crow tactics to steal the White House and have highlighted stories of registered voters struggling to get a state photo ID.
The law was already a partisan lightning rod when a top Republican lawmaker boasted that it'd allow GOP nominee Mitt Romney to beat Democratic President Barack Obama in Pennsylvania.

The Oct. 7, 2013, trial date was set Tuesday by a federal judge in Manhattan.
The judge listened as the defendants pleaded not guilty to a new indictment expanding the charges against them.
Prosecutors say some defendants were helping Madoff carry out his fraud as far back as the early 1970s. Madoff claimed when he pleaded guilty to fraud charges three years ago that he acted alone.
Prosecutors say it will take about two months to present all the evidence against those accused of helping him cheat thousands of people out of nearly $20 billion.
Madoff is serving a 150-year prison sentence in North Carolina.
