WASHINGTON (AP) - President Barack Obama says he's looking for immigration reform to be completed within six months.
He tells the Spanish-language TV network Telemundo that a deal should be attainable this year, but he wants it done even sooner. He says that politics, not technical issues, are standing in the way.
A group of senators, both Democrats and Republicans, has agreed on a framework for comprehensive immigration reform, including a path to citizenship for 11 million illegal immigrants already in the country. Obama is promoting his own set of principles similar to those included in the Senate plan.
In the Republican-controlled House, another group of lawmakers is working on its own proposal.

An unmanned Atlas rocket blasted off Wednesday night from Cape Canaveral. NASA's Tracking and Data Relay Satellite was on board.
This is the 11th TDRS (T-driss) satellite to be launched by NASA. The space agency uses the orbiting network to communicate with the astronauts living on the International Space Station. The satellites also relay all the images taken by the Hubble Space Telescope.
The first TDRS spacecraft was launched in 1983. The second was lost aboard space shuttle Challenger in 1986.
This newest third-generation TDRS carries the letter K designation. Once it begins working full time, it will become TDRS-11.
It costs between $350 million and $400 million.

NEW YORK (AP) - PepsiCo Inc. is removing a controversial ingredient from its Gatorade sports drink following customer complaints.
A spokeswoman for the company, Molly Carter, says the move was in the works for the past year after the company began "hearing rumblings" from consumers about the ingredient. She said it wasn't a response to a recent petition on Change.org by a Mississippi teenager.
That petition noted that the ingredient, brominated vegetable oil, has been patented as a flame retardant and is banned in Japan and the European Union. The petition had more than 200,000 supporters Friday.
Carter said the ingredient is still used in other PepsiCo drinks, such as Mountain Dew. PepsiCo's decision to remove the ingredient from Gatorade was first reported by the industry tracker Beverage Digest.

Another Appeal to Stop a Virginia Execution

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Attorneys are asking the U.S. Supreme Court to block the execution of a Virginia man who strangled two inmates and vowed to keep killing unless given the death penalty.
A panel of the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals refused to intervene today. Attorneys then asked the nation's top court to appoint them to 42-year-old Robert Gleason's case so they can order a mental health evaluation.
The attorneys argue Gleason wasn't competent to waive his appeals.
Gleason is set to die by electrocution tomorrow night at Greensville Correctional Center.
In Virginia, condemned inmates can choose between lethal injection and electrocution, and Gleason is the first inmate to choose electrocution since 2010.
Gleason says it's not that he wants to die, it's because he knows he will kill again if he's not executed.
He was serving life in prison when he killed his cellmate in 2009. After threatening to kill again, he strangled another inmate in 2010 as he awaited sentencing.

But people in the small San Joaquin Valley town who know his identity say he was teased for his small stature.
They describe him as smart but say he sometimes said irreverent things that brought scorn from classmates.
Neighbor Trish Montes says her son used to work at the school and tutored the student last year. She says her son felt sorry for him and would sometimes walk with him between classes.

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Anheuser-Busch InBev is introducing a new specialty brew with a Super Bowl ad.
The maker of Budweiser, Bud Light and other brews said Tuesday that Budweiser Black Crown is an amber lager. The first ad promoting it will run on Feb. 3 during Super Bowl 47, though the beer will be available in stores nationwide starting Jan. 21.
The beer's recipe resulted from a challenge to Anheuser-Busch InBev's 12 brewmasters, an effort dubbed Project 12. Customers were able to sample the options during a testing phase last year.
Budweiser Black Crown has 6 percent alcohol content. By comparison, Budweiser has 5 percent.

WASHINGTON (AP) - President Barack Obama will host Afghan President Hamid Karzai at the White House on Friday.
It's the first in-person meeting for the two leaders since Obama won re-election. His victory meant the continuation of his administration's plans to bring the U.S.-led war in Afghanistan to a close by the end of 2014.
The White House says Obama and Karzai will discuss the next phases of the U.S. transition out of Afghanistan. Obama is expected soon to decide what the U.S. role in Afghanistan will be after 2014.
Obama faces pressure from Democrats and even some Republicans to wind down the war more quickly, while the military wants to avoid a too-fast pullout that might squander hard-won gains.

WASHINGTON (AP) - Despite grumbling in his own party, John Boehner has been easily re-elected to a two-year term as House speaker.
The vote came a day after blistering attacks from lawmakers, including Republicans, over Boehner's decision to cancel a vote on aid to victims of Superstorm Sandy. In the end, only 10 Republicans voted for someone else as speaker. Boehner received 220 votes. Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi got 192 votes.
Boehner struggled to hold back tears and hinted there will be a battle over government spending with President Barack Obama.
In the Senate, Vice President Joe Biden swore in 12 new members elected in November, including Virginia Senator-elect Tim Kaine. Also, lawmakers who won another term and South Carolina Republican Tim Scott. The former House member was chosen by Gov. Nikki Haley to fill the remaining term of Sen. Jim DeMint, who resigned to head a Washington think tank.
The new Congress still faces the ideological disputes that plagued the dysfunctional 112th Congress, one of the least productive in more than 60 years.

NEW YORK (AP) - Sunny with a chance of flu? That's what some health scientists are thinking, as they study the weather for clues about how to predict disease outbreaks.
A growing wave of computer models factor in rainfall, temperature or other weather conditions to forecast disease. In one recent study, scientists said they could predict more than seven weeks in advance when flu season was going to peak in New York City.
Health officials are excited by this kind of work and the idea that it could be used to fine-tune vaccination campaigns. But some experts note that outbreaks are influenced as much, or more, by human behavior and other factors as by the weather.

The Pentagon says Defense Secretary Leon Panetta has permitted a three-star Army general accused of bullying subordinates to retire without a demotion in rank.
A Pentagon spokesman, Navy Lt. Cmdr. Nate Christensen, says Lt. Gen. Patrick O'Reilly was placed on the retirement rolls Tuesday.
A Pentagon inspector general's investigation last year found that O'Reilly regularly yelled and screamed at subordinates, often in public, demeaned and belittled employees and behaved in such a way as to result in the departure of at least six senior staffers from the Missile Defense Agency during his time as its director.
Panetta determined that O'Reilly had met the basic standard for being allowed to retire without a loss in rank, which is that he "served satisfactorily" as a three-star.

The president arrived early Wednesday morning, local time, after an overnight flight aboard Air Force One. He was rejoining his family for a holiday break after having returned to Washington following Christmas to deal with the unfinished business that threatened to throw the economy back into recession.
The House voted late Tuesday night on a package to avoid income tax increases for most Americans, allowing rates to rise on incomes exceeding $400,000 for individuals and $450,000 for couples. The wide-ranging deal, approved by the Senate earlier, delayed for two months billions in budget-wide cuts.

The vote was an overwhelming 89-8 and came well after midnight on New Year's Day.
A House vote is expected before Wednesday.
The White House-backed legislation would prevent middle-class taxes from rising, and raise rates on incomes over $400,000 for individuals and $450,000 for couples.
It also blocks spending cuts for two months, extends unemployment benefits for the long-term jobless, prevents a 27 percent cut in fees for doctors who treat Medicare patients and prevents a spike in milk prices.
A last-minute addition would also prevent a $900 pay raise for members of Congress from taking effect in March.
