Navy Deploys Another Aircraft Carrier to Persian Gulf

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) - The U.S. Navy says it's deployed a second aircraft carrier to the Persian Gulf region.

The move comes amid rising tensions with Iran over its disputed nuclear program.

According to Commander Amy Derrick-Frost of the 5th Fleet, based in Bahrain, the deployment of the nuclear-powered USS Enterprise along with the Abraham Lincoln carrier strike group marks one of the few times the Navy has had two aircraft carriers operating in waters near the Persian Gulf.

She says the deployment of a second carrier is "routine and not specific to any threat." She didn't say how long the Navy will keep the increased military presence in the region.

The ships will support U.S. military operations in Afghanistan and anti-piracy efforts.

They'll also patrol the strategic Gulf oil routes that Iran has threatened to shut down in retaliation for economic sanctions over its nuclear program.
