It seems like a surprising number of us are okay with carrying debt.
A recent National Federation for Credit Counseling poll shows one in five people are carrying debt from month to month and think that's a good way to manage credit.
Spokeswoman Gail Cunningham says you should commit to paying off debt as quickly as possible. Using a credit card like a piggy bank can get you into trouble down the road. She says sometimes you have to charge, but be smart. If your fridge goes on the fritz unexpectedly and costs $2,000, you might have to use a card. If you do, commit to paying that balance off within three to four months.
If you fall into the pitfall of getting behind month after month, consider the help of a credit counseling agency.
