FAA spokeswoman Arlene Murray says the plane was flying from Winston-Salem, North Carolina, to Fredericksburg when it crashed just 500 yards from Stafford Regional Airport. State police say the four men were traveling home from a Wake Forest basketball game in Winston-Salem. Richard Potter, Albert "Buck" Jacoby, Graham Green the Third and Michael Pappas are all from the Fredericksburg area. FAA spokeswoman Laura Brown says the flight was diverted from Fredericksburg to Stafford. Brown says she suspects the plane was diverted because of heavy fog in the area. State police Sergeant F.L. Tyler says investigators believe the pilot attempted an aborted landing around 11:30 last night, then turned left and hit trees. It ended up in the woods south of the runway. Searchers found the wreckage around 9 this morning. The search was hampered by thick fog. The Columbia 400 was registered to a Fredericksburg company called Homeowner Title, LLC.
