Bernard Cornwell has another winner with "Lords of the North," the latest in his Saxon Tales series.

By Lucia Anderson

TREACHERY, ven- geance, mayhem and glory! Bernard Cornwell has made his reputation as a writer of historical fiction by focusing on man's innate preference for achieving his goals by mowing down as many of his opponents as possible.

"Lords of the North" is the third in a series of novels set in late ninth-century Britain, the time when Saxon king Alfred the Great was battling the Danes for control of the land. The protagonist is Uhtred, a Saxon by blood, but raised by Danes after the death of his father. In the first two novels Uhtred joined with Alfred to help him defeat the Danes in a pivotal battle.

In this book Uhtred travels back up to Northumbria, the land of his birth, to avenge the death of his foster father and rescue his foster sister. There are battles, betrayal, religious conflict and even a little romance, with plenty of action and appealing characters.

"Lords of the North" is a great read for anyone who wants a thumping good story with lots of swashes to buckle. And Cornwell says Uhtred's adventures are not ended.

Lucia Anderson is a reporter at The Free Lance-Star.
