PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Rhode Island state police say they arrested a man whose blood alcohol level was .491, more than six times the legal limit.

They believe it's the highest level ever recorded in Rhode Island for someone who wasn't dead.

The man was arrested early Tuesday morning after he drove his car into a highway message board on Interstate 95 in Providence. Troopers had to carry him to the breakdown lane before taking him back to their barracks.

A trooper says a Breathalyzer test registered blood alcohol readings of .489 followed by .491.

The man was released from custody after promising to appear at a court hearing Friday.
