Date published: 10/14/2008
BEDFORD, Va. (AP) - A key monumental figure is headed to the National D-Day Memorial in Bedford. The bronze piece depicts a medic with an infantryman, both of whom are under fire. It is scheduled to be installed Wednesday on Elmon T. Gray Plaza, the sculpture display area. The work is by sculptor Jim Brothers. The Lawrence, Kan., artist has also finished all the portrait busts of Gen. Dwight Eisenhower's Supreme Command staff, as well as a monument of Eisenhower. The medic sculpture and other statuary will be dedicated on Veterans Day, Nov. 11. The memorial opened in June 2001. It honors American and Allied forces who took part in the World War II invasion of Nazi-occupied France on June 6, 1944.
