Hampton Roads cleanup continues

NORFOLK, Va. (AP) - A state transportation system spokeswoman says cleanup is continuing on a faulty pump system that prompted the westbound tube of the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel to close.

Virginia Department of Transportation spokeswoman Lauren Hansen says workers are still pumping water out of a pump house. She says that work will stop by Saturday morning and crews will wait until Sunday at the earliest to start assessing damage.

Hansen blamed power outages from a storm for a damaged pump and possible water main break that wasn't discovered until Thursday morning.

The closure caused massive traffic backups throughout the day and prompted an outcry from local officials.
