July fourth sees more fires nationally than any other day of the year and fireworks are responsible for half of them.

For the people that decide to shoot off their own, make sure they are legal. Most of those can be bought at stands set up throughout the area. Some examples; fountains, sparklers, snakes and smoke bombs. The illegal type include anything that leaves the ground, shoots across the ground or explodes. The legal fireworks are usually sold in stores in Virginia and available at roadside stands.

Like most counties and cities, Stafford County is cracking down. The Fire Marshall's Office will increase staff Saturday throughout the county. In addition to seizure of illegal fireworks if caught, the person in possession could be subject to a class one or two misdemeanor. That could carry a fine of up to $2500 and up to one year in jail.
