by Frank Hammon posted Jul 23 2013 7:49AM
The pilot of a single-engine plane has been killed in a crash in Spotsylvania County.

State Police say that the crash occurred at around 6:30 p.m. Monday. Police say that the plane was flying near Shannon Airport when it crash-landed near a runway. The plane caught fire and the pilot 22-year-old Edwin G. Hassel of Fredericksburg, the sole occupant, died.

The Free Lance-Star reports that the pilot may have intentionally crashed the plane.

State police spokeswoman Corinne Geller said the plane had taken off from the same airport, but she did not immediately know how long it had been in flight.

Police said the cause of the crash is under investigation. The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board have been notified.
