by AP posted Nov 27 2012 11:35AM
FAIRFAX, Va. (AP) - Longtime Fairfax County Circuit Court Clerk John Frey says he's dropping out of the 2013 race for Virginia attorney general.

Frey announced his decision in a recent posting on Facebook.

The Republican says both of his GOP opponents have campaigned across Virginia for a significantly longer time than he has. He says withdrawing his candidacy is the best thing for him, his family and the Republican Party.

Frey was elected circuit court clerk in 1991. He announced his candidacy for attorney general in December 2011.

The other Republican candidates are Del. Rob Bell of Charlottesville and Sen. Mark Obenshain of Harrisonburg. Sen. Mark Herring of Loudon is seeking the Democratic nomination.

The Washington Post reported Frey's announcement Tuesday.
