Scam Might Target Your Grandparents

by Associated Press posted Jun 28 2013 7:08AM
RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Attorney General Kenneth Cuccinelli is warning Virginians about a scam involving medical alert devices for seniors.

Cuccinelli says callers pose as representatives of a medical alert company claiming to need additional information, such as a debit or credit card number and home address, to have a free device delivered to the person's home. The targets are told that while the device is free, there's a monitoring fee for the service, thus giving the scammers access to personal financial information.

The attorney general says his office has received several calls from consumers who were suspicious after receiving such solicitations. He says this serves as a good reminder never to give out personal or financial information when someone initiates a call to you.
