Senator Urges Congress to Act on Transportation

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - U.S. Sen. Mark R. Warner is calling on the House of Representatives to act on a Senate transportation bill before the government's authority to spend money on transportation and levy fuel taxes expires.

Without action by Congress, that authority will expire Saturday.

House Republican leaders canceled a vote Monday on a three-month extension bill that would keep aid flowing to states while Congress debates an overhaul of transportation policy.

Warner said Wednesday that the lack of legislation will slow road and bridge projects.

The Virginia Democrat says the bill recently passed by the Senate includes more than $1 billion for highway and transportation projects in Virginia for each of the next two years.
