Auction set for Larsen's rare Yankee jersey

NEW YORK (AP) - The baseball jersey worn by New York Yankees legend Don Larsen when he pitched the only perfect game in World Series history will soon be available for auction.

Steiner Sports Memorabilia is conducting the auction in the fall. They say a bidding war is expected for the one-of-a-kind jersey. In May, a jersey worn by Babe Ruth sold for more than $4.4 million.

Larsen pitched the perfect game during Game 5 of the World Series at Yankee Stadium on October 8, 1956. The Bronx Bombers defeated the Brooklyn Dodgers 2-0 in the game and went on to win the series in seven.

Larsen, now 82, says the game is the best thing that ever happened to him.

Steiner will announce the auction at a press conference Thursday.

Beckham fails to make Britain's Olympic squad

WARSAW, Poland (AP) - David Beckham says he has failed to make the British Olympic soccer team.

The former England captain made Stuart Pearce's shortlist of 35 but wasn't selected for the final 18-man squad as one of three players over the age of 23 allowed to compete in the London Olympics.

"Everyone knows how much playing for my country has always meant to me, so I would have been honored to have been part of this unique Team GB squad," Beckham said Thursday in a statement to The Associated Press. "Naturally I am very disappointed, but there will be no bigger supporter of the team than me. And like everyone, I will be hoping they can win the gold."

Beckham had been heavily favored to be on the team after being instrumental in helping Sebastian Coe, the head of the London organizing committee, and his team win the rights to stage the games in the 2005 vote.

Roush gives Stenhouse the nod to replace Kenseth

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - Roush Fenway Racing has made its choice between two young drivers in need of additional seat time.

The team has picked Ricky Stenhouse Jr. over Daytona 500 winner Trevor Bayne to replace Matt Kenseth in the Sprint Cup Series next season. Kenseth is leaving at the end of the season.

Roush Fenway president Steve Newmark says Stenhouse was selected because he'll have three full seasons in the Nationwide Series when he makes the move.

Bayne has not run a full season since 2010. He is currently running a limited Cup schedule for The Wood Brothers, the team he took to Victory Lane in last year's Daytona 500. He's been slowed by sponsorship problems since.

Yankees put CC Sabathia on DL with groin strain

NEW YORK (AP) - The Yankees have placed ace CC Sabathia on the 15-day disabled list because he has a strained groin.

General manager Brian Cashman says the left-hander felt a twinge on Sunday night in the fourth inning of a game against the New York Mets. However, he didn't tell anyone about it until after he could still feel discomfort following his bullpen session on Tuesday.

Ring in the games: Countdown to Olympics

LONDON (AP) - Time to ring in the games. Almost.

Five super-sized Olympic rings were lowered off Tower Bridge on Wednesday, draping the internationally recognized symbol over the iconic landmark spanning the Thames river.

London Mayor Boris Johnson lowered the rings with a few words barked into a walkie-talkie from a barge circling below.

The fusing of a London icon - the gateway to the city - with the rings is a signal that London is ready to go one month before the games. The Olympics start July 27 and end on Aug. 12.

The massive rings , 82 feet wide and 37 feet all - are part of efforts to bedeck the city in Olympic banners and bold color ahead of the competition.

Birth mom: I raised questions about Jerry Sandusky

  Associated Press

Nearly two decades before Matt Sandusky's blockbuster allegation that he was sexually abused by his adoptive father, his biological mother raised questions about their relationship.

Debra Long had fought the local court system over her son's placement in the home of the famed Penn State assistant football coach.

Long has told The Associated Press that Sandusky was pushy and controlling and estranged Matt from his birth family. But she says Centre County's court system ignored her concerns because of Sandusky's stature.

The Sandusky family adopted Matt after he turned 18.

In an interview with police that was taped last week, he told investigators he was abused by Sandusky starting when he was 8 years old.

Jerry Sandusky is awaiting sentencing after being convicted of sexually abusing 10 boys.

Pa. gov: Pace of Sandusky investigation necessary

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Corbett says the pace of the investigation into Jerry Sandusky's child sex crimes was necessary to build an "ironclad" case against the former Penn State assistant coach.

Corbett told CBS' "This Morning" on Monday that the investigation might have taken longer than people would have liked but prosecutors needed to find as many witnesses as possible.

Sandusky was convicted Friday on 45 of 48 counts. He will likely spend the rest of his life behind bars for abusing 10 boys.

Corbett was attorney general when the investigation began following sex assault allegations in 2009. Sandusky wasn't charged until November 2011.

Corbett says Penn State's trustees are still awaiting the results of an internal investigation by former FBI director Louis Freeh into the school's handling of Sandusky.

Sandusky Emotionless Hearing Guilty Verdict
BELLEFONTE, Pa. (AP) - A juror says Jerry Sandusky showed no emotion as the guilty verdict was read at his trial and the juror views that as confirmation that the verdict was the right one.

Juror Joshua Harper says the jury had some disagreements and went back over testimony to reconcile possible inconsistencies. He didn't say which charges led to disagreements.

Sandusky, a former Penn State assistant football coach, was convicted Friday on 45 of 48 child sex abuse counts.

Harper tells NBC's "Today" that Sandusky was acquitted on one charge related to the boy known as Victim 2 who was attacked in a campus shower because the eyewitness, former grad assistant Mike McQueary, did not see penetration. He says McQueary made it apparent he saw something "that was wrong and extremely sexual."

ST. LOUIS (AP) - A second former St. Louis Rams employee has filed a suit against the NFL team claiming age discrimination.

Schilling: Company crash cost me baseball fortune

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Former Boston Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling says the collapse of his 38 Studios video game company has probably cost him his entire baseball fortune, and he put part of the blame on Rhode Island Gov. Lincoln Chafee.

Schilling said during an interview on WEEI-FM in Providence on Friday morning that he put more than $50 million of his own money in the company and that the money he made playing baseball is "probably all gone."

Schilling also said Chafee's public comments last month questioning the firm's solvency harmed the company as it tried to raise private capital to stay afloat.

38 Studios filed for bankruptcy protection on June 7. It had been lured to Rhode Island from Massachusetts in 2010 after Rhode Island offered a $75 million loan guarantee.

Asian soccer fights back against match-fixing

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) - Asia's reputation as a hotbed of soccer match-fixing and corruption is getting some overdue attention, as nations move to clean up the sport and position the region as a rival to Europe and South America in attracting players, fans and investment.

Last week Chinese courts handed out prison sentences to senior officials and players for accepting bribes, while South Korea is taking measures to improve the sport after the match-fixing scandal of 2011.

Earlier this week, soccer's governing body, FIFA, extended the national bans imposed by South Korea's K-League on 13 players into worldwide sanctions. Former national team player Kim Dong-hyun received a lifetime ban just a month after being arrested in Seoul for an attempted kidnapping at knifepoint.

Jets lowering prices of 12,000 upper tier seats
.

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) - The New York Jets are lowering the price of some 12,000 upper tier seats at MetLife Stadium for the 2012 season.

Jets President Neil Glat says that seats in the end zone, corners and some sideline seats that cut in from the corners will drop in price for next season.

The sideline seats, depending on the row, will fall from $105 per game to either $75 or $50. Those in the corners and in the end zone will drop from $95 to either $75 or $50.

Sellouts are not a concern for the Jets in the 82,500-seat stadium they financed along with the co-tenant Giants. Glat says the dip in prices is being made "to improve the value for our fans."

The Jets do not require personal seat licenses for the upper tier. The Giants do.

Thousands Rally to Support New Arena in Seattle

<VIDEO> SEATTLE (AP) - Gary Payton and Shawn Kemp got the loudest ovations, but it was Chris Hansen left accepting the most praise at a rally in downtown Seattle to support the push for a new arena that could eventually bring the SuperSonics back.

Thursday afternoon's rally crammed green and gold clad fans into Occidental Park just a few blocks north of Seattle's stadium district where CenturyLink and Safeco fields currently sit. Hansen's proposal before the King County and Seattle city councils calls for a $490 million facility just south of the Mariners' Safeco Field with nearly $300 million in private investment.

Hansen said he was overwhelmed by the turnout, with estimates of at least 4,000 in attendance. The rally ended with chants of "Thank you Chris!" and included appearances by Payton, Kemp and fellow former Sonics star Detlef Schrempf.

Lance Armstrong Faces Doping Charges

<VIDEO> AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - The U.S. Anti-Doping Agency is bringing doping charges against seven-time Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong, questioning his victories in those storied cycling races.

Armstrong, who retired from cycling last year, could face a lifetime ban from the sport if he is found to have used performance-enhancing drugs.

The story was first reported Wednesday by the Washington Post.

The charges from USADA come just months after federal prosecutors closed a two-year criminal investigation of Armstrong without indicting him.

Armstrong maintained his innocence, saying: "I have never doped, and, unlike many of my accusers, I have competed as an endurance athlete for 25 years with no spike in performance, passed more than 500 drug tests and never failed one."

Chavez-Lee prepared for middleweight title fight

The promoters of Saturday night's middleweight title fight between WBC champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. and challenger Andy Lee are certain that any controversy surrounding the venue in El Paso, Texas, has been resolved.

They're also hopeful no more trouble arises if the fight goes to the judges.

The bout between Mexico's favorite son and Ireland's top contender will take place at the University of Texas-El Paso's Sun Bowl Stadium, just across the border from Ciudad Juarez, where drug and gang violence has made the city one of the most dangerous in Mexico.

University of Texas system Chancellor Francisco Cigarroa briefly canceled the fight in April, citing a "higher than normal" risk assessment.

The moved created uproar in El Paso, statistically among the safest cities in the U.S.

NCAA cracks down on temporary decals
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - The NCAA is cracking down on temporary decals and logos that have caused players to slip during basketball games.

The NCAA has enacted a new rule requiring decals to be "consistent" with the rest of the court. An NCAA rules panel on Tuesday approved the change,.

The new rule doesn't restrict decals or logos. It just requires them to be of a similar finish to the rest of the court. The change also gives game officials the authority to suspend play if the court doesn't comply with the rule.

Separately, Judy MacLeod, executive associate commissioner of Conference USA, has been appointed to the Division I Men's Basketball Committee, effective immediately. Her term will run through 2014-15. She replaces Steve Orsini, the former athletic director at SMU.

Roddick aims to bounce back in disappointing year

LONDON (AP) - Andy Roddick is hoping to bounce back from a disappointing season at the Queen's Club grass court tournament.

The 29-year-old American has always been happy to put the clay court season behind him and turn his attention to grass, a surface he has excelled on by reaching three Wimbledon finals and winning the title at Queen's four times.

The seventh-seeded Roddick says: "When I get on a grass court it just feels natural to me. I don't feel I'm fighting myself like I do on clay."

After a first-round bye, Roddick faces Edouard Roger-Vasselin of France or Kazak qualifier Evgeny Korolev. The start of the warmup event for Wimbledon, however, was delayed by bad weather Monday.

Roddick also competes in doubles with another four-time former champion, Lleyton Hewitt.

Pope brings familiarity with offense to Steelers

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Leonard Pope smiled, shook his head and rolled his eyes incredulously. Then he politely answered the question.

Pope was the only unrestricted free agent the Steelers signed in the offseason, and questions for the 6-foot-8 tight end keep coming back again and again to one subject.

Not the 102 receptions or nine touchdowns he has totaled in his six-year NFL career, and not his appearance in the 2009 Super Bowl. Not even his nickname, "Champ" - or the fact he saved a 6-year-old boy from drowning in a swimming pool last summer.

All anyone wants to talk to Pope about is his familiarity with new offensive coordinator Todd Haley's offense. Wherever Haley has been the past six years - from Arizona to Kansas City and now Pittsburgh - he's taken Pope with him.

Nationals Summon LHP Gonzalez; Option Perry
WASHINGTON (AP) - The Washington Nationals have purchased the contract of veteran reliever Mike Gonzalez, who's expected to fortify a bullpen still without injured closer Drew Storen.

Gonzalez was signed to a minor league deal in early May. After making one appearances with Triple-A Syracuse, the Nationals felt the left-hander was ready to contribute in the big leagues and selected his contract from Syracuse on Sunday.

The 34-year-old Gonzalez has 56 career saves. He pitched last season for Baltimore and Texas.

Washington general manager Mike Rizzo says of Gonzalez: "He's a very accomplished veteran. We thought it was a good fit for us at the time with some of the injuries we have in the bullpen."

The Nationals optioned reliever Ryan Perry to Syracuse and moved Storen (elbow) to the 60-day disabled list.

SEC supports playoff that includes best 4 teams

DESTIN, Fla. (AP) - College football's most dominant conference has its wish list for a playoff.

The Southeastern Conference took an official stance on a proposed four-team playoff Friday when school presidents and athletic directors voted unanimously to support having the four best teams play for the national title. The league doesn't want a playoff to include ties to conference champions.

It makes sense that the powerhouse league, which has won six consecutive Bowl Championship Series titles, would want a best-four format. That gives the SEC the greatest chance to get two teams into the tournament every year.

The league also voted to keep its current football scheduling format, known as 6-1-1. Teams will play six division teams annually, have one permanent crossover rival and one game that rotates among the other six teams.
