LONDON (AP) - Michael Phelps broke the Olympic medals record Tuesday with his 19th as the United States romped to a dominating win in 4x200-meter freestyle relay at the London Games.
With 19 career medals spanning three Olympics, Phelps moved one ahead of Soviet gymnast Larisa Latynina, who got her haul in 1956, 1960 and 1964. And he finally got his first gold of these games, bouncing back from the disappointment of settling for silver when he glided at the end of the 200 butterfly earlier Tuesday.
The United States team of Ryan Lochte, Conor Dwyer, Ricky Berens and Phelps on the anchor leg won in 6 minutes, 59.70 seconds. France took the silver in 7:02.77, while China was third in 7:06.30.
Phelps now has 15 golds, two silvers and two bronzes.

BOSTON (AP) - Josh Beckett left the Boston Red Sox game in the third inning with an apparent lower back injury.
Beckett motioned for the trainer to come to the mound after walking Miguel Cabrera to force in the first run Tuesday night against the Detroit Tigers. His lower left back was checked and Beckett walked slowly off the mound. He was replaced with two outs by Clayton Mortensen, who retired the next batter, Prince Fielder.
Beckett began the game with a 5-9 record and a 4.57 ERA with a 1-5 mark in his previous nine starts. His name was mentioned in trade speculation before Tuesday's 4 p.m. deadline for non-waiver deals.
He retired the first eight batters before allowing an infield single, hitting a batter and walking two.

CORTLAND, N.Y. (AP) - New York Jets safety LaRon Landry has been activated from the physically unable to perform list after passing his physical, and has been cleared to practice when the team opens training camp Friday.
Landry, signed as a free agent in March, was placed on the PUP list Monday after not practicing with the team during offseason workouts. He had been rehabbing an Achilles/heel injury that cut short his season last year with the Washington Redskins.
Landry spent a good chunk of the offseason rehabilitating the injury on his own, saying last month that he received both platelet-rich plasma therapy and stem-cell treatments.
The Jets are reporting to camp Thursday, and Landry's health was one of the main questions as the team begins to prepare for the season.

SPARTANBURG, S.C. (AP) - Georgia Southern and Appalachian State were again picked as preseason favorites to battle for the Southern Conference football championship. How much longer that'll be the case beyond 2012 is anyone's guess.
The Eagles made the national Football Championship Subdivision semifinals last season and won their first league crown in seven years, ending Appalachian State's six-year run of earning at least a share of the SoCon title But since last season ended both small-school powerhouses expressed interest in moving up to the Football Bowl Division.
And that's not the only uncertainty in the 12-team Southern Conference as non-football playing members College of Charleston and Davidson are wooed by the shrinking Colonial Athletic Association.
SoCon commissioner John Iamarino says holding together his group has nearly become his fulltime job.

Questions about transparency have arisen since both urine samples from A.J. Allmendinger tested positive for what business manager Tara Ragan says was an amphetamine. Allmendinger has been suspended indefinitely and insists he does not know what caused the positive tests. NASCAR has provided no details about the positive tests.
Citing federal privacy provisions, Helton says NASCAR will continue to let those who test positive decide whether to disclose additional information.

NEW YORK (AP) - Moody's Investors Service says it may cut its rating on Penn State's credit as the university deals with the fallout from the Jerry Sandusky child sexual-abuse case and sanctions against the school's football team.
The agency has an 'Aa1' rating on Pennsylvania State University's credit. That is its second-highest possible rating. The firm said a recent report by former FBI Director Louis Freeh and sanctions levied by the NCAA could hurt student enrollment and fundraising for the university.
Moody's says Penn State has about $1 billion in debt.
The announcement comes a day after the NCAA fined Penn State $60 million, banned the school from playing in postseason bowl games for four years, and stripped the team of dozens of scholarships.

Other sanctions include a four-year ban on bowl games, and the loss of 20 scholarships per year over four years.
NCAA President Mark Emmert announced the staggering sanctions Monday at a news conference in Indianapolis. Though the NCAA stopped short of imposing the "death penalty" - shutting down the Nittany Lions' program completely - the punishment is still crippling for a team that is trying to start over with a new coach and a new outlook.
Sandusky, a former Penn State defensive coordinator, was found guilty in June of sexually abusing young boys, sometimes on campus.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - The NCAA says it will levy "corrective and punitive measures" against Penn State in the wake of the child sex-abuse scandal involving former football assistant coach Jerry Sandusky.
The NCAA announced Sunday that it will detail the sanctions on Monday. It disclosed no details, saying only that NCAA President Mark Emmert and Ed Ray, the chairman of the NCAA's executive committee and Oregon State's president, will be at the news conference.
Sandusky is awaiting sentencing after being convicted of 45 criminal counts for abusing 10 boys over a number of years. A report commissioned by Penn State found that coach Joe Paterno and other school leaders had helped cover up allegations against Sandusky.
Emmert has not ruled out the possibility of shutting down the Penn State football program in the wake of the scandal, adding that he had "never seen anything as egregious."

DALLAS (AP) - The Dallas Cowboys have been dropped from a lawsuit over lack of seating for some ticketholders at the 2011 Super Bowl in Texas.
U.S. District Judge Barbara Lynn on Thursday removed the team as a defendant. Part of the litigation can continue against the NFL.
The judge ruled the tickets were a contract between the buyers and the NFL. The Packers beat the Steelers 31-25 in the game at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington.
A Cowboys spokesman declined comment. An NFL statement notes the judge dismissed most of the lawsuit's claims.
The plaintiffs can continue suing the NFL for breach of contract. People with obstructed-view seats can continue their fraud claims.
Plaintiffs' attorney Michael Avenatti says evidence will be presented of NFL fraud against fans.

NEW YORK (AP) - The NFL's on-field officials say the league planned to lock them out rather than negotiate a new contract.
Members of the NFL Referees Association were locked out June 3 after talks broke down. The league has been contacting replacement officials.
Scott Green, the NFLRA president, and past president Ed Hochuli, both current referees, say the NFL is jeopardizing the safety of the players, as well as the integrity of the game, by considering using officials they feel are unqualified.
The officials say their wage offer was for a smaller increase than they received in the collective bargaining agreement that expired in May. They also cite as issues higher wages for officials in the NBA, NHL and Major League Baseball, and the loss of a pension system.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Penn State report on Jerry Sandusky's molestation of children isn't kind to school officials.
Former FBI director and federal Judge Louis Freeh (LOO'-ee free) says the most "saddening and sobering" finding from his group's investigation into the child sex scandal is school officials' "total disregard" for the safety and welfare of the ex-coach's victims.
He called out Hall of Fame football coach Joe Paterno, ex-President Graham Spanier, athletic director Tim Curley and former senior vice president Gary Schultz, saying that the "most powerful men at Penn State failed" to take any steps for 14 years,
The investigation concludes that the senior officials "concealed critical facts relating to Sandusky's child abuse" because they were worried about bad publicity.
Sandusky is awaiting sentencing after being convicted of 45 criminal counts. The scandal led to the ouster of Paterno and Spanier.

The United States won the overall count in 2008, 110-100 over second-place China. But China won 51 golds to 36 for the U.S.
Longtime Olympic prognosticator Luciano Barra of Italy predicts China will win 100 overall and 43 gold medals, with Russia at 79 and 30 and the United States at 78 and 35.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - Iowa coach Fran McCaffery has signed a new seven-year deal to remain with the Hawkeyes.
Iowa athletic director Gary Barta said Tuesday that McCaffery will be paid at least $1.66 million a year with a base salary of $1.3 million starting next season.
McCaffery could make up to $1.86 million per season if the Hawkeyes reach the NCAA tournament.
McCaffery left Siena to join the Hawkeyes before the 2010 season. His original contract was for six years and started at roughly $1.1 million per year.
Iowa won 18 games and reached the NIT in 2011-12. The Hawkeyes return three starters next season and bring in a freshman class featuring prized recruits Adam Woodbury and Mike Gesell.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - AJ Allmendinger says he would never knowingly take a prohibited drug.
Allmendinger issued a statement Tuesday, his first since he was suspended by NASCAR for failing a random drug test. Allmendinger was informed of his suspension hours before Saturday night's race at Daytona.
The 30-year-old driver says he has requested his "B" urine sample be tested, and he hopes the situation can be resolved with NASCAR as quickly as possible.
NASCAR does not disclose what substance was found in a failed drug test. Allmendinger and Penske Racing have not revealed details, either.
Allmendinger apologized for the distraction he has caused Penske Racing, his sponsors and fans.
Sam Hornish Jr. will replace Allmendinger in the No. 22 Dodge this weekend at New Hampshire.

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) - A Penn State investigation into whether university officials helped cover up that Jerry Sandusky was molesting children will be released Thursday.
The review is being led by former FBI director and federal judge Louis Freeh. Freeh on Tuesday announced the timeframe for the release of the report.
The report was commissioned by university trustees in November, about two weeks after the former assistant football coach was arrested on molestation charges.
The study is expected to disclose what occurred within the university, including any role longtime head coach Joe Paterno may have played when school officials fielded complaints about Sandusky in 1998 and 2001. Paterno was fired in the wake of his former assistant's arrest and died in January.
Trustee Ken Frazier has said the goal was to find out "who knew what, when," and to make recommendations for policy and procedural changes.

HERSHEY, Pa. (AP) - A fire has broken out at the historic Pennsylvania arena where Wilt Chamberlain scored an NBA record 100 points in a game.
Officials say the fire started Thursday afternoon at the west end of the 75-year-old Hershey Park Arena in Derry Township.
The arena is owned by Hershey Entertainment & Resorts, founded when Milton S. Hershey separated his chocolate manufacturing from his other businesses.
Hershey spokesman Jim Shellenberger says workers were putting a new roof on the domed building, but it's unclear if the work had anything to do with the fire. He says the roof isn't in danger of collapse.
Workers have left the arena. No injuries are reported.
The arena opened in 1936 and is primarily used for youth hockey. Chamberlain scored 100 points there for the Philadelphia Warriors against the New York Knicks on March 2, 1962.

Some Tough Going for the Red Sox

SEATTLE (AP) - For the second time in three nights, Boston catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia stood waiting for a throw from right field hoping it would get to the plate in time.
So far in Seattle, the Red Sox are 0 for 2 when it comes to game-deciding plays at the plate.
"That's two tough ones the last couple of days," Boston right fielder Cody Ross said.
Chone Figgins' sacrifice fly in the 11th inning was deep enough to allow Dustin Ackley to beat Ross' throw to the plate and the Mariners beat the Red Sox 3-2 on Saturday night.
With the Red Sox's infield playing in and expecting a possible squeeze bunt from Figgins, Seattle manager Eric Wedge let his little-used utility player hit. Figgins came through with a line drive off Boston closer Alfredo Aceves (0-5) that Ross caught cleanly. He made a strong throw, but the ball bounced before getting to the plate and Saltalamacchia could not pick it cleanly.
It was eerily familiar to the opener of the four-game series when John Jaso lined a single to right field in the ninth inning of a scoreless tie. Ross made another strong throw that night, but Saltalamacchia couldn't make a clean pick-and-tag on Casper Wells that night either.
"It was a little tougher. The ball had a little topspin so Cody had to run in on it and catch it lower than usual and it short-hopped me a little," Saltalamacchia said. "But it was one of those plays, kind of do-or-die on both sides of it, but a lot different than the night before."
It was the seventh career game-ending RBI for Figgins and the first on a sacrifice fly.
Shawn Kelley (2-2) pitched the 11th for the victory. But the bigger performance was Seattle closer Tom Wilhelmsen working two scoreless innings, and collectively the Mariners' bullpen that allowed just two runs in 8 1/3 innings of relief after starter Erasmo Ramirez left with pain in his right elbow. Charlie Furbush, Oliver Perez, Wilhelmsen and Kelley all had scoreless stints of at least one inning.
"We used all but one guy down in our bullpen and kept them in tow and really that was the story of the ballgame," Wedge said.
Jaso snapped a scoreless tie with a two-run double off Boston starter Josh Beckett in the sixth inning for Seattle. The Red Sox tied the game in the seventh thanks to an infield groundout from Ryan Kalish that scored Adrian Gonzalez from third and a passed ball by Olivo that rolled to the backstop and allowed Will Middlebrooks to score the tying run.
Olvio's mistake was forgotten when he dropped a two-strike single into right field that allowed Ackley to reach third base in the 11th.
But Boston had its chances and was just 1 for 12 with runners in scoring position. There was no bigger missed chance for Boston than the 10th inning. Dustin Pedroia led off with a single after going hitless in his previous 15 at-bats. David Ortiz followed with sharp base-hit back up the middle and quickly the Red Sox were threatening. Wilhelmsen got ahead of Saltalamacchia 0-2 and finally struck him out on a 2-2 breaking ball. Gonzalez then hit a grounder that bounced off the backside of the mound and handcuffed Ackley and kept the Mariners from turning an inning-ending double play. But Wilhelmsen got a weak grounder from Middlebrooks and the go-ahead run was left at third base.
"We had some opportunities to get some hits with runners in scoring position, but it's just one of those nights where we couldn't find the hole and didn't come up with the big one," Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine said.
Beckett made his first start since June 11 and was nearly perfect into the fifth inning when Olivo got Seattle's first hit with a broken bat single over the infield. Beckett ran into trouble in the sixth when a miscommunication between left fielder Daniel Nava and shortstop Mike Aviles allowed Kyle Seager's popup to fall for a hit. That loaded the bases for Jaso, who lined a double off the base of the wall.
Beckett avoided further damage in the inning and gave up just four hits and struck out four in six innings.
"It's good to have him back; threw strikes, was aggressive and had a pretty good curveball tonight," Valentine said.
Ramirez left in the third inning with an undisclosed injury after retiring the first eight batters and Wedge said after the game he was taken for an MRI on his elbow. With two outs in the inning, Ramirez threw a first-pitch strike to Aviles. After throwing the pitch, Ramirez signaled for Olivo, who then signaled to the dugout for the trainer. Ramirez had retired the first eight batters before leaving.

An Eventful Week One for Wimbledon

WIMBLEDON, England (AP) - Good thing Wimbledon schedules its middle Sunday as a day off.
Gives everyone a chance to catch their breath after an eventful Week 1.
Really, what could Week 2 possibly have in store to equal what the first six days offered?
Rafael Nadal lost in the second round to an unknown guy ranked 100th. Roger Federer dropped the first two sets of his third-round match before coming back to win. Five-time champion Venus Williams departed on Day 1, and her sister, four-time winner Serena, needed all of her tournament-record 23 aces to pull out a 9-7 third-set victory in the third round. There even was the only perfect set - winning 24 of 24 points - in women's professional tennis history.
Action resumes Monday with all 16 fourth-round matches.
