Former player sues DC United over concussion

WASHINGTON (AP) - A former D.C. United defender has filed a $12 million lawsuit against the team and former coach Thomas Soehn, saying they rushed him back onto the field after the concussion that ultimately ended his career.
Bryan Namoff alleges that he suffered permanent brain damage from a hit he sustained during a game in September 2009. He says team doctors did not evaluate him after the concussion or perform neurocognitive tests and that Soehn decided to play him in a game three days later. That turned out to be the last game of Namoff's career.
He says he has permanent headaches along with memory, sleep and vision problems.
The lawsuit was filed Wednesday in D.C. Superior Court. A D.C. United spokesman says the team has no comment on pending litigation.

Union approves IR rule change, new trade deadline

NEW YORK (AP) - The players' union has approved a rule change that will allow one designated player to return from injured reserve and play this season.
The NFL Players Association also agreed to move the league's trading deadline back two weeks to after games in Week 8.
NFL owners voted for both changes in May. But the union had to sign off on them and did so Thursday, six days before the regular season kicks off.
One "marquee" player placed on injured reserve will be able to return to practice after the sixth week of the schedule and to the lineup after the eighth week. That player must be on the 53-man roster after the final preseason cut, which comes Friday.
Moving the trade deadline could create more action than in the past, when teams rarely moved players at the deadline.

NHL, NHLPA talks on hold

NEW YORK (AP) - The NHL's collective bargaining talks are on hold until Friday.
Donald Fehr, the executive director of the NHL Players' Association, had originally said he was "optimistic" the union would table a counterproposal Thursday. Fehr could extend a counteroffer on Friday at the NHL's New York office.
The current agreement expires Sept. 15, when the league has said it will lock out the players if a new deal is not in place.
The two sides are at odds over hockey-related revenue. The league wants to knock down the players' percentage to 46. The players' share of HRR was 57 percent last season. Fehr said changes in how HRR is calculated would see the amount of money players give up to escrow increase "significantly." Under the NHL's proposal, the union said current contracts would not be paid in full.
NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman issued his second proposal to the NHLPA on Tuesday in New York, an offering he called "meaningful" and "significant." On Wednesday, the two sides met again, and broke the proposal down with several player representatives in attendance.
Fehr was accompanied Wednesday by NHLPA special consultant Mathieu Schneider, as well as Mike Komisarek (Toronto), Douglas Murray (San Jose), George Parros (Florida), Chris Phillips (Ottawa), Kevin Shattenkirk (St. Louis), Kevin Westgarth (Los Angeles), Craig Adams (Pittsburgh), Nick Bonino (Anaheim), B.J. Crombeen (Tampa Bay), Alex Goligoski (Dallas) and Ron Hainsey (Winnipeg).
The NHL regular season is slated to begin on Oct. 11.

NEW YORK (AP) - The NFL will open the regular season with replacement officials.
League executive Ray Anderson has told the 32 teams that with negotiations remain at a standstill between the NFL and the officials' union. The replacements will be on the field beginning next Wednesday night when the Cowboys visit the Giants to open the season.
The NFL Referees Association was locked out in early June and talks on a new collective bargaining agreement went nowhere. Replacements have been used throughout the preseason, with mixed results.
In 2001, the NFL used replacements for the first week of the regular season before a contract was finalized.

Jets would turn to Tebow if Sanchez goes down

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) - Tim Tebow would be the starting quarterback for the New York Jets this season if Mark Sanchez was sidelined by injury.
Coach Rex Ryan says Wednesday that Tebow would "expand his role" for the Jets, rather than the team turning to a more conventional-style quarterback such as third-stringer Greg McElroy - which some fans and media have speculated might be the case.
Tebow is listed as the No. 2 quarterback, so it seems obvious that he would fill in. But the fact the Jets plan to use Tebow in specific packages raises questions over whether he would remain in that role if Sanchez were hurt.
"We feel good about what Tim can do," Ryan says, adding that he's also confident in McElroy, who'll start Thursday at Philadelphia.

NEW YORK (AP) - Negotiations for a new collective bargaining agreement between the NHL and its players resumed Tuesday morning at the league offices, then took a slight break.
Limiting the personnel at the bargaining table in the hope of making progress, only Donald Fehr, the director of the NHL Players' Association, and assistant Steve Fehr met with NHL commissioner Gary Bettman and deputy Bill Daly. Traditionally, several players have joined in, but not this week as the end of the current CBA - Sept. 15 - draws near.
Not long after the meeting started, however, Donald Fehr appeared outside the building, telling reporters talks had paused just for a bit.
"I think the appropriate thing to do under the circumstances is go back (to our office). We've got constituents and so on," Fehr said. "And so we'll see you later on I'm sure."

ASHBURN, Va. (AP) - Incumbent Graham Gano has beaten out Neil Rackers in the competition for the Washington Redskins kicking job.
Rackers was among the first round of cuts Monday as the Redskins trimmed their roster to 75 players.
Gano won a competition that was mainly decided on the practice field. The Redskins attempted only two field goals in their first three preseason games, both by Rackers. He made a 28-yarder and missed from 54.
The 25-year-old Gano missed an NFL-high 10 field goal attempts last season, but five were blocked. He's made 74 percent of his attempts since joining the Redskins during the 2009 season, the second-worst percentage in the NFL over that span.
The 36-year-old Rackers has played for Cincinnati, Atlanta and Houston over 12 seasons.

Vick returned to the field Sunday night for the Philadelphia's annual practice party at Lincoln Financial Field. He left last Monday night's game after taking a hard hit that left him with bruised ribs and didn't play in Friday's game at Cleveland.
"I thought he threw the ball last night just beautifully; threw it strong and aggressively," Mornhinweg said Monday. "So, I think he's ready to rock and roll. That's my point on that. I think he's ready to go."
Vick has taken just 12 snaps in two preseason games and isn't expected to play against the Jets on Thursday.

OWINGS MILLS, Md. (AP) - Baltimore Ravens linebacker Terrell Suggs has been placed on the physically unable to perform list.
That means Suggs will have to miss at least the first six weeks of the season. The move, announced Monday, comes as no surprise because Suggs is recovering from a torn right Achilles, an injury that should keep him sidelined at least into November.
Suggs, the reigning Defensive Player of the Year, had 14 sacks last season.
Baltimore also placed wide receiver-returner David Reed (knee) on the PUP list and placed four players on injured reserve: defensive tackle Ryan McBean (ankle); safety Emanuel Cook (leg), and linebackers Darryl Blackstock (leg) and LB Stevie Baggs (leg).
The moves got the Ravens to the 75-player limit.

ORANGE, Calif. (AP) - Jerry Grant, a race driver who made history by breaking 200 mph in an Indianapolis 500-style car, has died.
Indianapolis Motor Speedway says in a statement that Grand died Aug. 12 at age 77. Family friend Gary Bryson tells the Los Angeles Times (lat.ms/TZDCmt) that Grant died from liver failure and diabetes at a hospital in Orange, Calif.
Grant was in 10 Indy 500s in the 1960s and '70s. His best finish was seventh place.
His second-place finish behind Mark Donohue in 1972 was thrown out because he used gas from another driver's supply after pulling into Bobby Unser's pit. Grant's final 12 laps weren't counted and he fell to 12th place.
Three months later Grant set a record when his Indy-style car topped 200 mph at Ontario Motor Speedway.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) - The U.S. Anti-Doping Agency stripped Lance Armstrong's seven Tour de France titles Friday, erasing one of the most incredible achievements in sports after deciding he had used performance-enhancing drugs to do it.
Armstrong, who retired a year ago, was also hit with a lifetime ban from cycling. An athlete who became a hero to thousands for overcoming cancer and for his foundation's fight against the disease is now officially a drug cheat in the eyes of his nation's doping agency.
In a news release, USADA said Armstrong's decision not to take the charges against him to arbitration triggers the lifetime ineligibility and forfeiture of all results from Aug. 1, 1998, through the present, which would include the Tour de France titles he won from 1999 through 2005.
Armstrong has strongly denied doping and contends USADA was on a "witch hunt" without any physical evidence against him.

Armstrong says USADA doesn't have the authority to vacate his Tour titles. However, Tygart told The Associated Press that USADA can do it.
Tygart called the Armstrong case a "heartbreaking" example of a win-at-all costs approach to sports.

Michael Rocco started all 13 games and led the Cavaliers to an 8-5 record and their first bowl game since 2007 last year. Rocco is the presumed starter, but London says Rocco, sophomore David Watford and Phillip Sims, who transferred from Alabama and is eligible, have been competing throughout practice. London says the coaches are "taking the time to do this right."
Virginia held a closed scrimmage Wednesday.
London says in the remaining practices, the coaching staff will "throw everything we can at them" and see what their limitations are before compiling the depth chart at the position. He also wants to talk to each quarterback.

TORONTO (AP) - The NHL collective bargaining talks lasted only 90 minutes on Thursday.
It was the first full bargaining session of the week between the league and the NHL Players' Association after talks in Toronto were called off Wednesday afternoon following a private meeting between top league and union executives.
On Wednesday, Gary Bettman and deputy commissioner Bill Daly spent about two hours with players' association executive director Donald Fehr and his brother Steve Fehr, the union's No. 2 man.
Key economic issues were expected to be the main topic of conversation this week. The sides have put two different offers on the table and are still grappling with a wide financial gap.
The collective agreement is set to expire Sept. 15. The NHL says it will lock out the players if a new deal hasn't been reached.

NEW YORK (AP) - Changes NFL owners wanted for injured reserve and the trade deadline have not been approved by the players' union, meaning the old rules probably will stay in place this season.
In May, owners voted to tweak IR rules so teams could pick one player to come off injured reserve after Week 8. That player would have to be on the 53-man roster after the final preseason cuts.
Currently, once a player goes on IR, he is out for the season.
Owners also wanted to move the trade deadline back two weeks.
But the collective bargaining agreement says the NFL Players Association must sign off on such changes, and league spokesman Greg Aiello says: "We have no agreement with the union at this time on making these changes."

McLendon has sparkled in Hampton's spot, recording a sack in the preseason opener against Philadelphia and added a pair of tackles and a quarterback pressure in a victory against Indianapolis last week.
Hampton says McLendon has only "scratched" the surface of his ability.

When the offense stalls, standout punter Jonathan Plisco averaged 46.2 yards last year.

The committee had asked officials to analyze the 75kg division final in which Esquiva Florentino Falcao lost 14-13 to Japanese boxer Ryoto Murata, but the International Boxing Association said Tuesday that there was not enough evidence to prompt a review.
The committee made the request after learning through Brazilian media that referee Mariusz Gorn of Poland told an official after the fight that he made a mistake and regretted giving Falcao a two-point penalty that eventually proved costly for the Brazilian.
The boxing association told the committee that the referee only showed sympathy for the Brazilian's loss but never implied he made a mistake.

Taylor stepped in front of Andrew Luck's pass and returned it 50 yards for a touchdown in Pittsburgh's 26-24 preseason win over Indianapolis on Sunday night, just the second time in Taylor's career he's taken an interception to the end zone.
The steady Taylor has been a fixture in the Steelers secondary for nearly a decade but has just 13 interceptions in 141 games. The plainspoken Taylor concedes he's dropped more picks than he can count through the years, one of the reasons he spent the offseason working on improving his hands.
The Steelers had three INTs in all against the Colts, a good sign for a team that finished last in the NFL in takeaways last season.

Baltimore has been outscored by 49 runs, committed more errors than any team in the majors and ranks last in stolen bases.
Yet, instead of stumbling toward a 15th consecutive losing season, the surprising Orioles trail the AL East-leading New York Yankees by only 5 1/2 games and are in second place in the wild-card race.
Baltimore has been successful because of its ability to win the close ones. The Orioles are 22-6 in one-run games, including an ongoing 11-game streak that began in late June. They've also won 12 straight in extra innings.
Much of the credit goes to a bullpen, along with added depth in the starting rotation.

Penn State trustees back president on NCAA action

The vast majority of Penn State's board of trustees have voiced support for the president's acceptance of tough penalties imposed by the NCAA over how the university handled child molestation allegations against a former assistant football coach.
No vote was taken during a conference call on Sunday. Board chairwoman Karen Peetz told fellow trustees that the panel could not vote because 10 days' notice of the meeting was required. But more than two dozen members of the 32-member board then voiced support for President Rodney Erickson's decision and a desire to move forward, although many criticized the sanctions.
The NCAA on July 23 barred the university from postseason play for four years, fined it $60 million, stripped it of future scholarships and invalidated 112 of the football team's wins.

Board chairwoman Karen Peetz sent an email Thursday to fellow trustees that said there was confusion about how Penn State accepted the sanctions and whether it was the "best course" for the university.

Daly was the ninth alternate at Crooked Stick who made it into the PGA 21 years ago, then stunned the field and the gallery with his grip-it-and-rip-it style that captured the Wanamaker Trophy that year. Daly wowed the crowds at The Ocean Course with his long drives and steady touch around the greens.
He held a share of the lead with an eagle on the par-5 11th and a 12-foot putt to save par on No. 18.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) - Nebraska football truly is a family affair for the Cottons.
Offensive line coach Barney Cotton played for the Cornhuskers in the 1970s. Ben and Sam, his oldest and youngest sons, are tight ends. Middle child Jake is an offensive lineman. That makes Nebraska the only FBS team this season to have three brothers on the roster.
Christine Cotton, Barney's wife and the players' mom, has had to alter her game-day apparel this year. She's been wearing a jersey with Ben's number (81) on the front and Jake's number (68) on the back. This year she'll add Sam's number (84) to the sleeves.
Cynical fans have said the Cotton boys got their scholarships, in part, because their dad is on the staff. Barney says each son has proved deserving.

NFL spokesman Greg Aiello says Monday, "No such settlement offer has been made." He adds that the league "will continue to respect the court proceedings on this matter and have no further comment at this time."

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) - A Penn State trustee said he plans to file an appeal with the NCAA over the strict sanctions imposed on the university for the Jerry Sandusky child sex abuse scandal.
Trustee Ryan McCombie in a letter to fellow trustees sent Monday wrote he's taking action in the interest of due process and sought an NCAA hearing.
A copy of the letter was obtained by The Associated Press. McCombie verified the letter but declined comment otherwise.
Among the penalties was a four-year postseason ban. College sports' governing body acted after Penn State handed over results of its internal investigation led by former FBI director Louis Freeh.
The university accepted the sanctions.
The NCAA last week said the penalties weren't subject to appeal after Joe Paterno's family said they planned to file one.

Not bad.
Last season? Different story.
His three interceptions were fewer than he had in the 2010 game vs. Chicago alone. He didn't reach the end zone at all. And Cowboys receiver Dez Bryant victimized Hall with deep grabs on third-and-long for the decisive plays that dealt the Redskins two late defeats.
"D-Hall is a magnet for the public eye," fellow starting cornerback Josh Wilson said. "He gets a lot of criticism sometimes. But you've got to look at the big picture. There are a lot of coverages where we look like we may have gotten beat, but it's not our fault at all. He's doing a great job."
