LANDOVER, Md. (AP) - RG3 and the Washington Redskins are NFC East champions.
Robert Griffin III ran for a touchdown, and fellow rookie Alfred Morris rushed for 200 yards and three scores Sunday night as the Redskins won their first division title in 13 years by beating the Dallas Cowboys 28-18.
The Redskins are 10-6 and will host the Seattle Seahawks next Sunday, having won seven straight since their bye week. Washington is the first NFL team to rally from 3-6 to make the postseason since the Jacksonville Jaguars in 1996.
The Redskins would have been out of the postseason with a loss. Instead, the Cowboys will miss the playoffs for the third straight year. Dallas finished 8-8, stumbling in a do-or-die end-of-regular-season game for the third time in five years.

LANDOVER, Md. (AP) - Washington Redskins rookie running back Alfred Morris has broken Clinton Portis' franchise record for yards rushing in a season.
Morris reached 1,524 yards for the season with a 10-yard gain in the third quarter against the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday night. Portis gained 1,516 yards on the ground in 2005.
Morris was a sixth-round draft choice out of Florida Atlantic in this year's draft.
He entered the game Sunday needing 104 yards to top Portis' team mark. Morris topped 100 for the day with his second carry of the second half and was up to 111 yards two runs later. He had a 17-yard touchdown run in the second quarter.
Fans began chanting "Alfred Morris!" after he broke the record.

ASHBURN, Va. (AP) - Robert Griffin III sounds like the coach. Mike Shanahan sounds like a player.
As the Washington Redskins prepare for the winner-takes-the-division regular season finale vs. the Dallas Cowboys, rookie quarterback Griffin spoke Wednesday about treating the game like any other. He said he'll tell his teammates to not make the moment "so big that you can't grab ahold of it."
Shanahan then took to the podium and took the other approach. He said Sunday's matchup is not a "normal game." He said it's a time when players can't make mistakes and that it's the type of game that can make a career.
The Redskins are 9-6. The Cowboys are 8-7. Sunday's winner takes the NFC East, although Washington could still get a wild card berth with a loss.

PISCATAWAY, N.J. (AP) - Rutgers accomplished one major goal this season, earning a share of the Big East title for the first time in school history.
Though a 20-17 loss to Louisville in the finale dashed the Scarlet Knights' hopes for the program's first BCS berth, the consolation prize of the Russell Athletic Bowl presents coach Kyle Flood and his players with an opportunity to add another accomplishment.
A victory over Virginia Tech on Friday would clinch a 10-win season, just the third since the program was credited with playing the first college football game against Princeton in 1869. It would also mark Rutgers' sixth straight bowl win dating to 2006.
The Scarlet Knights (9-3) are playing in the most prestigious postseason game in school history.

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) - Syracuse has suspended sophomore tailback Adonis Ameen-Moore and reserve tight end Max Beaulieu for the Pinstripe Bowl on Saturday for violating athletic department rules.
Head coach Doug Marrone announced the suspensions in an email that did not elaborate on what the players had done.
Ameen-Moore, who was used mainly in the Orange's short-yardage formation, gained 108 yards on 30 carries and scored six touchdowns in the six games he played. Beaulieu played in just one game this season, a home win over UConn.
Starting outside linebacker Marquis Spruill also has been disciplined. He will not play "a significant portion" of the Pinstripe Bowl against West Virginia.
Spruill and running back Steve Rene were arrested Dec. 2 and charged with misdemeanors after scuffling with Syracuse Police. Marrone did not specify how much of the game Spruill will miss. The junior is fourth on the team in tackles with 62 and is a three-year starter.

Optimistic offseason for O'Brien, Penn State

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) - This is a critical offseason for Penn State, even if the Nittany Lions don't have a bowl from which to build on for the first time in eight seasons.
Coach Bill O'Brien and his staff were busy traveling this month to re-affirm and finalize Penn State's first recruiting class since the NCAA announced sanctions against the school in July for the Jerry Sandusky child molestation scandal.
An overachieving 8-4 season appears to be carrying over to the recruiting trail. Blue-chip prospects like Pennsylvania tight end Adam Breneman and Virginia quarterback Christian Hackenberg have stuck to their commitments, and others are on the way.
So, as thoughts turn to a new calendar year, and Penn State fans go through a holiday season in which they aren't packing their bags for a sunny bowl destination, at least there is a wave of optimism that should carry them all the way to September and the kickoff of Year 2 with O'Brien.

UNDATED (AP) - Virginia Tech's practices are moving from player-development mode to bowl preparation.
Coach Frank Beamer set Wednesday as the day for the Hokies to transition into game-specific drills for the Russell Athletic Bowl against Rutgers.
The Hokies (6-6) used the early part of their postseason practices to give players that redshirted or were lightly used reserves a chance to take center stage and gain experience for next season.
After a disappointing year that began with expectations of contending for the national championship and ended with the Hokies scrambling to become bowl eligible, several players say the team views the bowl game as a chance to end on a high note and build momentum heading into next season.
Virginia Tech faces the Scarlet Knights (9-3) on Dec. 28 in Orlando, Fla.

ASHBURN, Va. (AP) - Washington Redskins coach Mike Shanahan says Robert Griffin III will be the starter again once doctors say the rookie's sprained right knee has healed "100 percent."
Shanahan said Monday that he hopes it's not too long before Griffin is cleared, but the coach gave no indication as to when he expects that to be.
Another rookie, Kirk Cousins, filled in for Griffin on Sunday and led a 38-21 win over the Cleveland Browns.
Shanahan said the performance won't tempt him to start Cousins again just to give Griffin extra time to rest the knee. Said Shanahan: "If the doctor gives his OK, he's going to play."
The Redskins are 8-6, tied for first in the NFC East. They visit the Philadelphia Eagles this week.

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) - A judge says he will rule later this week on whether a lawsuit over sports gambling in New Jersey can continue.
U.S. District Judge Michael Shipp heard arguments Tuesday in Trenton. He says he will issue a ruling by Friday as to whether the leagues have standing to continue the lawsuit.
The four pro leagues and the NCAA sued Gov. Chris Christie in August after he vowed to defy a federal ban on sports wagering. New Jersey's Legislature enacted a sports betting law in January, limiting bets to the Atlantic City casinos and the state's horse racing tracks.
The leagues argue gambling hurts the integrity and perception of their games. Lawyers for the state argued Tuesday that the leagues have prospered for decades alongside legalized sports gambling in Nevada and widespread illegal gambling.

ASHBURN, Va. (AP) - Washington Redskins tackle Jordan Black has been suspended without pay for four games for violating the NFL's policy on performance enhancing substances.
The league announced Monday that Black's suspension begins immediately and will include playoff games if the Redskins advance that far.
Black become the sixth Redskins player suspended by the league in less than two seasons for drugs-related issues, following Phillip Buchanon, Trent Williams and Fred Davis last year and Tanard Jackson and Cedric Griffin this year.
The 32-year-old Black had to rapidly gain weight when the Redskins signed him this summer after he spent a year out of football. He was a seldom-used backup until Sunday, when he filled in at right tackle after Tyler Polumbus suffered a concussion in a win over the Cleveland Browns.

Wall says Monday that swelling prevents him from testing his knee with on-court movement. He hasn't participated in a full practice, let alone played in a game, with the 3-18 Wizards.
The 2010 No. 1 overall draft pick got a lubricating shot Friday.

He notes that he'll need to restrict his court time once he returns, "because I'm not going to be fully in the best of shape or play 40 minutes a game like I was used to doing."

NHL fans are getting fed up with the ongoing lockout.
Some supporters have started grass roots efforts to pledge they won't return when the labor strife is settled. Los Angeles hockey fan Steve Chase started the "Just Drop It" campaign that encourages fans to boycott one NHL game for every game canceled after Dec. 21st.
No tickets, no TV, no merchandise. They won't spend a minute watching games or spend a dime on the league.
Penguins star Sidney Crosby understands why fans are upset over the third lockout in Commissioner Gary Bettman's 20-year tenure. He says it's pretty easy for fans, players and management to feel frustrated over the lockout.
History shows the fans will return. The NHL totaled a record 21,468,121 fans in 2011-12, seven years after a lockout wiped out a full season.

"We're not listing them as out," head athletic trainer Rick Burkholder said. "They're still very much alive for things and we'll see how they do today and take it day by day."
Vick, who was injured on Nov. 11, would return in a backup role. Rookie quarterback Nick Foles is the starter for the rest of the season.
McCoy got hurt on Nov. 18. Rookie running back Bryce Brown has filled in nicely for him.
Tight end Brent Celek won't play against the Bengals (7-6) because of a concussion he sustained on the first play in a 23-21 win over Tampa Bay. Burkholder says Celek already has passed his ImPACT test, but won't be able to completely the team's five-stage recovery process in time.

MOORESVILLE, N.C. (AP) - Furniture Row Racing will field its own pit crew next season.
The single-car team had previously been using pit crews from other organizations, most recently a crew from Stewart-Haas Racing.
But Furniture Row general manager Joe Garone said Tuesday forming its own crew is critical to growing the team.
The crew will train out of Performance Instruction & Training under veteran pit crew coach Mike Houston. He was a front-tire carrier for Dale Earnhardt Jr. at Hendrick Motorsport and is a former college football player.
Furniture Row goes into next season with Kurt Busch as driver and Todd Berrier as crew chief.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - The New York Yankees say Alex Rodriguez will have surgery on his left hip and will miss the start of the season and possibly the entire first half.
Rodriguez has a torn labrum, bone impingement and a cyst, the team said Monday. The Yankees said he will need to follow a pre-surgery program over the next four-to-six weeks and the team anticipates he will be sidelined four-to-six months. That timetable projects to a return between the start of May and mid-July.
A-Rod had right hip surgery on March 9, 2009, and returned that May 8. The Yankees said this operation will be "similar but not identical."

BLACKSBURG, Va. (AP) - Two Virginia Tech walk-on football players have been suspended from the team after being charged with manufacturing and detonating an explosive device.
Blacksburg Police Lt. Steven Taylor says 20-year-old Joshua Trimble and 19-year-old Brian Rody were arrested Sunday after a small explosion near an apartment. Nobody was injured.
Tech spokesman Bryan Johnston says that under university policy, players facing felony charges are suspended until charges are resolved. A preliminary hearing is set for Jan. 24. The Hokies play Rutgers in the Russell Athletic Bowl on Dec. 28.
James Turk, the players' attorney, said they were playing a prank on a friend and meant no harm.
Rody is a scout team quarterback, while Trimble is a reserve linebacker and special teams player. Both are redshirt freshmen from Ashburn.
