At 8:14 a.m. Tuesday state police were called to a four-vehicle crash in the westbound lanes of I-495 just west of Exit 173/Van Dorn.
A Ford Fusion was traveling west on I-495 when it changed to the left to the lane. As it changed lanes it collided with a box truck (it was one of those large, tree-trimming trucks). The truck lost control and struck a tractor-trailer. The tractor-trailer then ran off the left side of the road and struck the Jersey wall. The impact with the wall forced the tractor-trailer back into the roadway where it struck an SUV and then overturned.
As the trailer of the tractor-trailer overturned, it ruptured and spilled cucumbers across the westbound lanes of I-495. By 8:33 a.m., one right lane was open to westbound traffic.
The driver of the tractor-trailer suffered non-life threatening injuries and was taken to Fairfax Inova Hospital. There were three children in the tractor-trailer at the time of the crash none were injured.
The male driver of the Ford Fusion suffered serious, but not life threatening, injuries and was also transported to Fairfax Inova Hospital. The driver, Ammar A. Alshakarchi, 26, of Alexandria, has been charged with making an improper lane change. None of the six riding in the tree-trimming truck was injured; nor was the driver of the SUV.
