USA Football Launches Safety Program

NEW YORK (AP) - Roger Goodell played the role of running back while a youth coach demonstrated the safest technique for tackling.

The NFL commissioner was impressed with USA Football's newest initiative, launched Wednesday: Heads Up Football.

The nation's governing body for the sport on the youth level is using a three-step game plan to ensure safer play. USA Football is training player safety coaches, who then will train coaches at their leagues and educate parents and players on the proper way of tackling to avoid injuries. Their motto could be "Keep your head out of it."

Those coaches also will educate everyone involved in youth football about concussion awareness and the correct way to identify and use equipment.

Goodell told the three coaches, "I like your technique initiative."
