VDOT Crews Get onto Secondary Roads and into Neighborhoods

by Deirdre Blake posted Mar 5 2014 9:24AM
VDOT has been ready to treat roads of has done it over two dozen times this winter. We've had our fair share of snow in the region too and if you think it's been colder this winter, you're not crazy. Since early December, the National Weather Service says 16 days have been below freezing and on 11 of them the low was in the single digits.
The big problem now is the daytime melt and nighttime freeze up. There was lots of black ice on the roads on Wednesday morning and it's likely again early Thursday.
Now that all the primary roads are handled, VDOT crews turned their attention to the secondary roads and subdivisions. They tried to make a pass through at least most of them on Tuesday and go back today. The layers of freezing rain and mix in with sleet and snow made this storm more tough to handle. Once all of the neighborhood plowing and treating is done, now the layers of packed snow and ice have to be broken up and moved out of the way of cars. Don't panic though, the official start of Spring is just 15 days away.
