Va gets nearly $9M in federal education funding

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Virginia is getting nearly $9 million in federal funding to continue efforts to turn around the state's lowest-performing schools.

The funding through the Education Department's School Improvement Grants program was announced Thursday by U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan,

Officials say the funds are part of the $535 million provided through the fiscal year 2011 budget and made available to states under the program.

Virginia has received about $78 million in funding since the program was redesigned in 2009.

The funding is given to the state, which then allocates the money to schools statewide.
