LOS ANGELES (AP) - Salma Hayek says she is proud to be Mexican and that comments suggesting otherwise were "lost in translation."
The 45-year-old actress issued a statement Thursday after German Vogue magazine quoted her as saying she "hardly had any memories of what it is to be Mexican."
Hayek says she has never denied her background or culture, and has taught her young daughter to speak Spanish and appreciate Mexican history, music, food and folk art. She goes on to say that she has always tried "to represent my Mexican roots with honor and pride" and is saddened by the magazine's misinterpretation of her remarks.
Hayek plays the leader of a Mexican drug cartel in the Oliver Stone drama "Savages."

BATAVIA, N.Y. (AP) - A western New York woman who's accused of punching a 70-year-old WalMart greeter in the face on Christmas Eve is about to stand trial.
Jacquetta Simmons was charged with two counts of felony assault but one of those was reduced last week to a misdemeanor.
Nevertheless, the 26-year-old faces up to seven years in prison after being charged under New York state's "Granny Law." The law makes it a felony to injure someone 65 or older if the defendant is at least 10 years younger than the victim.
Simmons is accused of knocking Grace Suozzi off her feet with a blow to the face while Suozzi was checking her receipt. Simmons' lawyer says Suozzi grabbed her bag.
Jury selection starts Monday in Genesee County Court in Batavia.

RYE BROOK, N.Y. (AP) - Two brothers from a New York City suburb have an advertising concept that's on a roll - a roll of toilet paper.
Bryan and Jordan Silverman are creators of toilet tissue printed with ads, and sometimes with coupon codes that can be read by cellphones. The Journal-News (http://tinyurl.com/ccveoyb ) says in a story Sunday that the brothers expect their product to appear this fall in the Port Chester-Rye Brook Public Library.
Twenty-two-year-old Jordan Silverman came up with the idea for Star Toilet Paper in 2010. His 18-year-old brother tells the newspaper that he was initially skeptical but came to see it as advertising to "a really captive audience."
The brothers from Rye Brook have entered their concept in a contest run by Entrepreneur magazine.

Scrabble Champ Booted for Hiding Blank Tiles

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) - One of the top young Scrabble players in the country has been kicked out of the game's national championship tournament in Florida after organizers say he was caught hiding blank letter tiles.
National Scrabble Association executive director John D. Williams, Jr., said Tuesday that a male player was ejected from the 350-player event in Round 24 of the 28-round event.
Williams would not identify the player by name or age because he's a minor. There are four divisions and he was competing in Division 3.
Organizers said the cheating was spotted by a player at a nearby table, who noticed the ejected player conceal two blank tiles. When confronted by the tournament director, he admitted to it.
The tournament concludes Wednesday, with the winner receiving the $10,000 top prize.

INDIANA, Pa. (AP) - Police have charged two out-of-state men with robbing two other men in western Pennsylvania by claiming they were recording a video for a reality TV show called "You Just Got Robbed."
Police in Indiana, Pa., tell The Associated Press the incident happened about 1:20 a.m. and that the suspects apparently attend a nearby technical school. They're identified as 21-year-old Randall Smith, of Temple Hills, Md., and 18-year-old Artie Goodwine, of Memphis, Tenn.

Online court records don't list attorneys for the men. Smith has posted bail but Goodwine remained in the Indiana County Jail on Monday, about 45 miles northeast of Pittsburgh.

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) - The music stopped at Jackie Robinson Ballpark in Daytona Beach after a minor league umpire ejected the music DJ for playing "Three Blind Mice" during the game.
The ejection came in the eighth inning of Wednesday's game between the Daytona Cubs and the Fort Myers Miracle.
The Daytona Beach News-Journal reports Cubs manager Brian Harper was arguing a call at first base when he heard home plate umpire Mario Seneca bellow "you're out."
Harper says he thought he was being kicked out of the game. Instead, the umpire ejected the music man.
The public address system at the stadium was shut down for the rest of the game. The newspaper reports fans took it upon themselves to announce players as they approached the plate.
