Bovine Vandals
SOUTHAMPTON, Mass. (AP) - The vandals that damaged a Massachusetts cemetery this week have pleaded "moo."

Police say a small herd of cows knocked over 40 American flags and veterans' bronze grave markers, then snacked on a few flower arrangements, at the Center Cemetery in Southampton on Monday.

Motorists called to report that the cows were loose. Police contacted the owner, Henry Wykowski, who caught and removed the cows from the cemetery.

Chief David Silvernail says the cows are an "ongoing problem," and his department has responded to complaints about the roaming bovines three or four times since last spring.

Cemetery Commission member Robert Floyd tells The Daily Hampshire Gazette he plans on asking the farmer to pay for the damage once he comes up with an estimate.

Corndog Stop Leads to $1 million
MERLIN, Ore. (AP) - Laid off since May, Riley Gunn was driving his wife and kids home to their cabin in the woods in Southern Oregon after registering for computer programming classes, when he pulled off the freeway to buy corndogs for the kids.

Gunn says he decided to also buy a lottery ticket because he felt sure he'd win - even though money was tight and he knew his wife wouldn't approve. He purchased an $8 ticket, letting the machine pick the numbers.

When he checked online, Gunn found he'd won $1 million.

Gunn says after collecting his $670,000 in winnings, after taxes, he gave a tenth to his church, bought a pair of new Jeeps, and put in a bid on a house. He plans to use the rest to start his own software business.

Lion on the Loose was Actually a Labradoodle
NORFOLK, Va. (AP) - A lion reported on the loose in Norfolk is actually a Labradoodle with a cut resembling the shaggy mane and tawny coat of a big cat.

Daniel Painter's dog, Charles the Monarch, so resembles the king of the jungle, police received a call Tuesday of a baby lion on the loose.

The Virginian-Pilot (http://bit.ly/TJkTxb) reports that police called the Norfolk Zoo to make sure their two lions were in their cages, which they were.

The dog's coif is, in fact, intended to look like the mascot of Old Dominion University.

This wasn't Charles' first case of mistaken identity. Painter said police have told him several times people have reported seeing a lion when it was really his dog.

     He often tells people he's a "lab-a-lion."

Holiday Light Display Waives Middle Finger
BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - The holidays may be over, but a Denham Springs woman wants to keep an unusual light display on her roof, showing an extended middle finger to her neighbors.

A federal judge heard testimony Monday about whether Sarah Childs should be granted an injunction, barring the city of Denham Springs and police from requiring her to remove the display. The hearing will continue next week.

Childs says she put up the roof message because she believed a neighbor stole her dog. She says police threatened her with fines and arrest because of the lights. She and the American Civil Liberties Union of Louisiana sued the city and police.

Lawyers for Denham Springs and police say officials didn't threaten Childs. They also argue that the display isn't protected speech under the Constitution.

Hundreds ring in 2013 with icy plunge in NY waters
NEW YORK (AP) - Hundreds of hardy swimmers rang in 2013 with a plunge into the icy sea off Brooklyn's Coney Island, an area struggling to recover from Superstorm Sandy.

Members of the Ice Breakers and the Coney Island Polar Bear clubs and other brave bathers stripped down to their trunks or dressed in costumes for the annual New Year's Day splash.

Some people hit the surf dressed only in bikinis or briefs. One woman dressed as a mermaid. Another swimmer wore a hat with horns. Temperatures outside were in the 30s, and people screamed at the shock of the cold water.

This year, Polar Bear club members and others were raising money for Sandy relief efforts. The area was badly flooded by the late October storm.

The Ice Breakers try to raise awareness of water pollution.

Colorful costumes abound at Philly Mummers Parade

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - A Mardi Gras-like New Year's Day parade believed to be the nation's oldest folk festival has been held in Philadelphia.

The century-old annual Mummers Parade features thousands of performers dressed in colorful costumes adorned with sequins and feathers. Tuesday's parade boasted painted comics, string bands and other brigades marching down Broad Street, the city's main north-south thoroughfare.

One skit featured a glittery yellow tank and a gigantic red, white and blue hat and was geared toward thanking members of the military. Another featured performers who amassed into a sea of pink to commemorate breast cancer awareness.

Houston resident John Akard is visiting Philadelphia and took in the dizzying and deafening scene of debauchery for the first time. He says the Mummers Parade is "a little crazy."
